Dario T Bonetta

Associate professor in Faculty of Science at Ontario Tech University. Co-founder Metasys Genomics Corp. Interests include: biologically based materials derived from plant and bacterial sources; plant and animal development; inter-kingdom signalling and cell communication.

Caroline Brennan

I did my PhD at King's College London in the Lab of Prof J.M. Littleton working on adaptive mechanisms underlying drug dependence. I demonstrated adaptive changes in the number of DHP sensitive VOCC following chronic exposure to central depressant drugs and showed that these changes were associated with genetic vulnerability to drug dependence.

I undertook post-doc training at the Clinical Research Centre Harrow, UK before joining the laboratory of Prof Nigel Holder at The Randall Institute, KCL and moving with him to UCL in 1998. Whilst at KCL and UCL I used zebrafish as a genetic model system for analysis of mechanisms underlying development.

Since 2000, I have been a Lecturer in Molecular Genetics in the School of Biological Sciences QMUL. Our work combines the two areas of my expertise: Molecular mechanisms underlying drug dependence and zebrafish as a developmental genetic model system. We have developed behavioural assays of drug seeking, compulsive drug seeking and relapse in zebrafish and are establishing lines of fish in which to explore the genetics contributing to these behaviours.

C. Titus Brown

Titus Brown received his BA in Math from Reed College in 1997, and his PhD in Developmental Biology at Caltech in 2006. He has worked in digital evolution, climate measurements, molecular and evolutionary developmental biology, and both regulatory genomics and transcriptomics. His current focus is on using novel computer science data structures and algorithms to explore big sequencing data sets from metagenomics and transcriptomics.

Viktor V. Brygadyrenko

Dr. Viktor Brygadyrenko is an Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology and Ecology at Oles Honchar Dnipro National University.

His main scientific projects include:
- Effect of heavy metal ions on the development of invertebrates.
- Morphological variability in populations of beetles in conditions of anthropogenically altered ecosystems.
- Trophic relations of species in litter macrofauna of Ukraine.
- Structure of litter macrofauna communities in forest ecosystems of Ukraine.
- Influence of medicinal plants, flavourings and source materials, approved for use in and on foods, on eggs and larvae of nematodes of mammals.
- Ecological niches of ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) in Ukraine.
- Morphometric variation in ground beetles.

Laura Cancedda

Dr. Cancedda graduated in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Genoa in 1999, with a thesis on the role of neurotrophic factors on neurotransmitter release. She received her Ph.D. in neurophysiology from Scuola Normale Superiore in 2003, under the supervision of Dr. Lamberto Maffei. In Pisa, she investigated the molecular and environmental basis of experience-dependent plasticity in the rat brain. In 2003, she moved to University of California at Berkeley in Dr. Poo’s laboratory where she focused on molecular mechanisms of GABAergic-transmission modulation. Starting in 2006, she has also started a collaboration on a project aimed at studying early determinants of neuronal polarization.

Currently, she holds a team-leader position at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa and a scientist position at the Telethon Dulbecco Institute. Laura is also a scholar of the FENS KAVLI network of excellence. Her research focuses on the role of extracellular factors such as GABA in neurogenesis, migration and morphological maturation of cortical neurons under physiological as well as pathological conditions.

Mario R. Capecchi

Member of the National Academy of Sciences & the European Academy of Sciences.
Recipient of many awards including the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences; the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research; the National Medal of Science; the Wolf Prize in Medicine; the March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology; and the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine with Smithies and Evans.

Julieta Carril

Dr. Julieta Carril is a researcher at the CONICET (National Scientific and Technical Research Council), Argentina. Working at the Laboratory of Histology and Descriptive, Experimental and Comparative Embryology (LHYEDEC), Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, National University of La Plata, Argentina. Her research focuses on the role of developmental reprogramming processes in the morphological evolution of Neornithes birds. Dr. Carril is also a member of the Avian Biomorphodynamic Research Group (ABRG)

Ruben J. Cauchi

Ruben J. Cauchi is an Associate Professor of Neurogenetics at the University of Malta School of Medicine. He obtained his D.Phil. from the University of Oxford (UK) and did his postdoctoral research at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, University of Cambridge (UK). Prof. Cauchi heads the ALS/MND Lab at the University of Malta and leads Malta’s National ALS/MND Registry & BioBank, aiming at understanding the cause of motor neuron disease (MND) including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and identify innovative treatments.

Maria Carmen Collado

Maria Carmen Collado (PhD 2005) holds a Research Scientist position at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC) in Valencia (Spain). Her research work is multidisciplinary and includes microbiology, food science, nutrition and human health. Her interests are focused on probiotics, microbiota and health and nutrition during pregnancy and early life period.

George M. Coupland

Director of the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research, Cologne, Germany. Recipient of several honours, the most recent being election to the National Academy, USA in 2012.
