Leonidas Matsakas

Dr. Matsakas is currently Senior Lecturer at the Biochemical Process Engineering at Luleå University of Technology (Sweden). He received his PhD in Industrial Biotechnology from the school of Chemical Engineering at National Technical University of Athens (Greece) in 2015. His main research activities focus on the development of methods for the pretreatment and fractionation of lignocellulosic and aquatic biomass and the subsequent conversion of the cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin streams to biofuels, bio-based chemicals and bio-materials through biochemical and (thermo)chemical methods. He is also actively working on the development of mixotrophic and heterotrophic microalgae biorefinery processes for the production of high-added value compounds, such as omega-3 PUFAs, pigments and protein.

Tirayut Vilaivan

Tirayut Vilaivan was born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1971 and obtained his D Phil in Organic Chemistry from Oxford in 1996 under supervision of the late Professor Gordon Lowe, FRS. He is currently a professor of chemistry at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. His research interests include catalytic asymmetric synthesis, synthesis and applications of conformationally constrained peptide nucleic acids, and antimalarial drug development.

Research portfolio spans across the applied sciences, from thermal manikin testing, to the cutting-edge of product development (computer-based decision aids, wireless communications, and wearable sensors). Current scientific work areas include: 1) individualized mathematical modeling of thermoregulatory responses to clothing, environment, activities, with the inclusion of components for rest and recovery, 2) studies of metabolic costs over complex terrain, 3) real-time assessments of ground reaction forces and energy demands during locomotion and load carriage, and 4) innovative approaches to data management and the application of mathematics in integrative physiology.

Chih-Hsin Cheng

Dr. Chih-Hsin Cheng is a soil biogeochemist who focuses on soil physicochemical properties and carbon and nutrient cycles in agro- and forest ecosystems. His research includes (1) natural and anthropogenic influences on carbon stocks and carbon cycle; (2) characterization of biochar and soil organic matter and their roles in stabilization of organic carbon; and (3) assessment of carbon sequestration in afforestation/reforestation.

Anne Kuhn holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Rhode Island, and has expertise in the field of spatial statistics and developing approaches for evaluating the relative risks from chemical and non-chemical stressors on spatially structured populations of wildlife species across. Anne develops and evaluates watershed indicators to reflect and predict aquatic condition in lakes, streams and estuaries. Her current research involves evaluating key intrinsic factors controlling watershed physical processes and connectivity, and quantifying watershed-level stressors (e.g., land use, stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon, nutrient loads, climate change, etc.) that influence the condition and integrity of water bodies within watersheds.

CARLA FIORENTINI is presently Director of Preclinical Research at the Association for Research of Integrative Oncology Therapies (ARTOI). She was Director of “Natural Substances, Traditional Medicine” Section at the Dept. of Therapeutic Research and Medicines Evaluation, and Coordinator of a Research Group at the Italian Center for Global Health, Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), Roma. Academic Degree in Biology and Specialty in Microbiology, University of Roma. Post-doctoral training at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. Her current research is focused on unravelling the role of bacterial protein toxins in cancer and on the use the bacterial toxin CNF1 as a potential novel therapeutic for central nervous system disorders. She is co-inventor in five different patents on CNF1 activity on the central nervous system. As co-author of numerous book chapters and articles in leading journals, she is renowned in the field of bacterial protein toxins.
