Giovanna Bosica graduated cum laude from the University of Camerino, Italy, in 1993 with a Laurea degree, equivalent to M.Sc.(Hons), in Chemistry and obtained her Ph.D. degree in Chemical Sciences, in the field of organic synthesis, in 1997 from the same institution. In 1995 during her Ph.D. she spent a six months research period at the University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, as an Erasmus Fellow.
In 1999 she was appointed Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Camerino.
In October 2008 she moved to the University of Malta where she was appointed Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and subsequently obtained the promotion to full Professor in March 2014. She lectures for different courses in the field of organic chemistry/synthesis and natural products.
She is member of the Royal Chemical Society (MRSC) since 2011 and of the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 2015. In March 2016 she has joined the European COST Association, participating at the COST Action CA15106, C-H Activation in Organic Synthesis (CHAOS), as a MC member from Malta [CA15106 MT].
Dr. Mukund Chorghade is President and Chief Scientific Officer, THINQ Pharma / MVRC Research/ Chicago Discovery Solutions. He has had Adjunct Research Professor / Visiting Fellow / Scientists appointments at Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Cambridge, Caltech, Univ. of Chicago, Rutgers, Strathclyde and others. He provides synthetic chemistry and pharmaceutical development expertise to academic laboratories, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies. His research interests are in Traditional Medicine derived New Chemical Entities and the discovery of “chemosynthetic livers” that find utility in drug metabolism, valorization of biomass and environmental remediation.
Dr. Chorghade earned B. Sc. M. Sc. degrees from the University of Poona, and a Ph. D. at Georgetown University. He completed postdoctoral appointments at the University of Virginia and Harvard, visiting scientist appointments at University of British Columbia, College de France / Universite’ Louis Pasteur, Cambridge and Caltech and directed research groups at Dow Chemicals, Abbott Laboratories, CytoMed and Genzyme. He received three “Scientist of the Year Awards”, and is on the Scientific Advisory Board of several corporations / foundations. He is a Fellow of the ACS, AAAS, AIC and RSC, the Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telengana Academy of Sciences and has been a featured speaker in national and international symposia
Damien P. Debecker is Associate Professor at the UCLouvain (Belgium), teaching physical chemistry, process engineering, principles of biorefining, and industrial waste treatment. His research group aims at developing new heterogeneous catalysts and biocatalysts, paving the way to the design of more sustainable chemical processes. At the interface between green chemistry, materials chemistry, biochemistry and chemical engineering, his expertise lies in the preparation of innovative solid (bio)catalysts and in their evaluation in relevant reaction conditions. Catalyst preparation methods include the aerosol-assisted sol-gel, emulsion-templating, non-hydrolytic sol-gel, colloidal methods, enzyme immobilization. Targeted applications cover biomass upgrading, volatile organic compounds total oxidation, biocatalyzed organic synthesis, CO2 methanation, olefin metathesis, etc.
Our research interests are primarily in the development of novel organic synthetic methods, especially ones that are “greener” than traditionally and synthesis of compounds with interesting properties. Particular current research projects involve use of zeolites and solid-supported reagents and catalysts to gain selectivity in organic reactions; lithiation reactions which we have used to devise novel heterocyclic ring syntheses and to introduce selectivity into aromatic and heterocyclic substitution reactions; heterocyclic chemistry; polymeric materials and design and synthesis of novel compounds with interesting chemiluminescent or other photoactive properties. The current research focuses on the chemistry of tear ferning which is a valuable tool in the detection of dryness of eye. We are investigating the dryness of the eye through evaluation of tear osmolarity using the TearLab system and various other techniques. Also, we are investigating the ocular tear film in diabetic and smoker subjects to test the correlation between dryness of the eye and diabetes disease and nicotine.
I obtained my PhD from the University of Valencia (Spain) focused on Supramolecular & Bioinorganic Chemistry, in which I worked in metalloenzymes mimetics and anion receptors. Upon completing my PhD in 2013, I performed several postdoctoral research positions in the University of Kansas (USA) and Institute Curie (France), in which I specialized in the development of drugs for non-canonical nucleic acids such as G-quadruplexes, triplexes or i-motifs. Then, I joined the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London as Newton Fellow to develop new tools to target and visualize G-quadruplexes in cells. I continued my projects as IdEx Fellow in the European Institute of Chemistry and Biology in Bordeaux (France). Actually, I’ve started my team in the Institute of Molecular Science in the University of Valencia, where I’ve developed novel systems and methodologies to target non-canonical DNA structures and unravel their biological roles.

Prof. E.J. Lenardao has pioneered studies on green procedures to prepare organochalcogen compounds (sulfur, selenium and tellurium-containing). He has made major contributions in the synthesis of vinyl chalcogenides and the chemical modification of natural occurring compounds by including selenium and sulfur in their structures. Some results of his studies were published in prestigious journals and contributed to the prospection of many boosted antioxidant semi-synthetic molecules. Since 2007, Prof Lenardao is a researcher of The Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Fellow of RSC, and a Member of the International Board of the Selenium and Sulfur Redox and Catalysis Network. Currently, studies on new chalcogen-containing reduced risk insecticides and antibiotics are among his research interests.

I am Principal Lecturer in Organic Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and is group leader for the Organic Medicinal Research Group.
My main research focus is in the area of synthetic medicinal chemistry with much of the research focused towards the development of dyes and probes towards healthcare applications. I am also interested in designing new antimicrobials which is focused around small molecule design. Another area which interests me is the chemistry of ascorbic acid and utilising its amazing properties to generate new medicinally active compounds.
Svetlana B. Tsogoeva is Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, since February 2007. She received her Diploma in Chemistry with Distinction in 1995 from St. Petersburg State University, where she completed her doctoral thesis in 1998 on the “Synthesis of Modified Analogues of Steroid Estrogens” supported by Procter & Gamble. In 1998, she moved to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, Germany, for a postdoctoral project under the sponsorship of the DFG, where she was dealing with the synthesis of chiral amidinium ions and their application as organocatalysts for the preparation of (+)-estrone derivatives using Diels-Alder reactions.
In July 2000 she joined the Degussa AG Fine Chemicals Division in Hanau-Wolfgang, Germany as a research scientist, where she has been working on the synthesis and the application of new oligopeptide catalysts for the enantioselective Julia-Colonna asymmetric epoxidation of olefins. In January 2002 she was appointed a First Junior Professor in Germany at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen, where she established her own research group supported by BMBF, DFG, FCI and Degussa AG. Her research is currently focused on asymmetric organocatalysis, one-pot & domino processes, deracemization of chiral bioactive compounds, synthesis of artemisinin-derived hybrids for medicinal chemistry, as well as chemistry in live cells.
Tirayut Vilaivan was born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1971 and obtained his D Phil in Organic Chemistry from Oxford in 1996 under supervision of the late Professor Gordon Lowe, FRS. He is currently a professor of chemistry at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. His research interests include catalytic asymmetric synthesis, synthesis and applications of conformationally constrained peptide nucleic acids, and antimalarial drug development.
