Research Experience & interest
The research interest of Hani Abdelhamid is focused broadly on science and technology at the nanoscale and for material science to push scientific boundaries in diverse areas of biochemistry, biology, biomedicine biotechnology, nanocatalysis and laser based analytical. The main thrusts are concentrated on the topics as below:

Gonzalo Campillo-Alvarado

Gonzalo Campillo-Alvarado is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Reed College in Portland, OR, USA. His research focuses on designing functional and dynamic (i.e., stimuli-responsive) crystalline materials, with an emphasis on boron, for applications of chemical separations, pharmaceutics, petrochemistry, and electronics. His lab integrates knowledge of organic-, supramolecular-, reversible- and mechanochemistry.

Before joining Reed, he was an Illinois Distinguished Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA). He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Iowa (USA) as a CONACyT fellow, and his BSc in Biopharmaceutical Chemistry from Universidad Veracruzana (Mexico).

Kuntal Chatterjee

I am a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA. My expertise includes various spectroscopic (time-resolved and steady-state IR, UV-Vis, table top, synchrotron, and XFEL), mass spectrometric (TOF, quadrupole, ion traps), diffraction techniques, and ab initio calculations to probe structure, solvation and dynamics of biomolecules, aromatic hydrocarbons, and artificial photosynthetic molecules.

P. Davide Cozzoli

P. Davide Cozzoli received his MSc degree in Chemistry in 1999 and his PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2004 from the University of Bari, Italy. From 2004 to 2005 he worked as post-doctoral fellow at the University of Bari. In 2005 he joined the National Nanotechnology Laboratory (NNL) of CNR Institute Nanoscience, Lecce, Italy. As CNR Associate Researcher, he led the Nanochemistry group of NNL from 2009 to 2014. Since 2015 he holds a permanent position as Associate Professor of Experimental Matter Physics at the University of Salento, Lecce, Italy, and he responsible for Nanochemistry Facility of the CNR Institute of Nanotechnology, Lecce. Currently, he serves as Associate Editor of Sci. Adv. Mater. J. Nanoengineering & Nanomanufacturing, Mater. Focus, J. Nanomater., Intern. J. Photoenergy, and Front. Mater., and as editorial board member of Science China Materials, AIMS Materials Science, and General Chemistry. So far, he has published about 120 scientific works, edited one book (a second book is under preparation) and two conference proceedings. His scientific work has overall attracted over 7700 citations (H-index=42). His research focuses on the development of advanced colloidal inorganic nanocrystals with controlled structural and topological features for applications in (photo)catalysis, photovoltaics, optoelectronics and biomedicine.

Jiang Cui

Dr. Cui is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research is focused on the development of electrode materials for energy storage applications. He is also interested in applying first-principles calculations and in-situ TEM to study the thermodynamics and kinetics of battery materials.

Damien P. Debecker

Damien P. Debecker is Associate Professor at the UCLouvain (Belgium), teaching physical chemistry, process engineering, principles of biorefining, and industrial waste treatment. His research group aims at developing new heterogeneous catalysts and biocatalysts, paving the way to the design of more sustainable chemical processes. At the interface between green chemistry, materials chemistry, biochemistry and chemical engineering, his expertise lies in the preparation of innovative solid (bio)catalysts and in their evaluation in relevant reaction conditions. Catalyst preparation methods include the aerosol-assisted sol-gel, emulsion-templating, non-hydrolytic sol-gel, colloidal methods, enzyme immobilization. Targeted applications cover biomass upgrading, volatile organic compounds total oxidation, biocatalyzed organic synthesis, CO2 methanation, olefin metathesis, etc.

Junkuo Gao

Dr. Junkuo Gao is professor at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, China. He obtained his PhD in Zhejiang University, China in 2010. Then, he worked at Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) as a postdoctor. In 2013, he joined the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University as Distinguished professor of Zhejiang Province, director of Institute of New Energy Fiber Materials. His research interest is metal-organic frameworks based nanomaterials for clean energy and green chemistry applications. He has published more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as J. Am. Chem. Soc., Small, Coord. Chem. Rev., J. Mater. Chem. A etc. with more than 8900 citations and a H-index of 49.

Artem Mishchenko

Artem Mishchenko is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Physics and Astronomy, the University of Manchester. His research interests are in the fields of condensed matter physics and nanotechnology, with the emphasis on quantum transport in van der Waals materials; in addition, he has strong expertise in electronics, nanoelectromechanical systems, and instrumentation development. The major contributions to these fields have been published in over 70 peer-referred papers, many in Science and Nature journals, leading to more than 12000 citations and h-index of 33. He is regularly invited to present his results on international conferences; he also leads the collaboration between Manchester and High Magnetic Field Facilities in Europe. He has initiated several new research directions, such as a tunnelling and capacitance spectroscopy of van der Waals heterostructures, and nanoelectromechanics in 2D materials; his works led to the development of many new functional devices, including nanoscale transistors and photovoltaic sensors. As a recognition of his achievements, he has received several prestigious awards including SNSF Fellowship, EPSRC Early Career Fellowship, and EMFL Prize 2018. He is also named in 2018 list of Highly Cited Researchers from Clarivate Analytics.

Antonio Pereira Gonçalves

Dr. António Pereira Gonçalves is a Coordinator Researcher of the Department of Engineering and Nuclear Sciences of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon University. He obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 1996 at IST, on intermetallic uranium compounds. His research interests are in the fields of Solid State Chemistry, Materials Science, Exploratory synthesis, Phase diagram studies, Crystal growth, Design of new materials, Nanostructured materials, Actinide and Rare Earth Intermetallics, Oxides, Pnictide and Chalcogenide compounds, Strongly Correlated Electronic Systems, Thermoelectric materials and Nuclear materials for peaceful applications. Currently, he is working on uranium compounds for fundamental and applied studies and on compounds and thermoelectric systems for waste heat recovery. Dr. António Pereira Gonçalves has authored or co-authored more than 250 publications in peer review journals, having more than 350 conference presentations (22 invited). Since 2017 he is the President of the Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies (C2TN), a Research Unit of IST.

Valentin O Rodionov

Prof. Valentin Rodionov began his undergraduate studies in 1997 at the Higher Chemical College of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2000, after moving to the United States, he was accepted to the University of Maryland and promoted directly into the graduate program without having to complete an undergraduate degree. He earned his M.S. in 2002 and enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA.

At Scripps Dr. Rodionov worked under the guidance of Profs. M.G. Finn and K.B. Sharpless. His thesis project was focused on mechanistic investigation of copper (I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition and provided the first glimpse of the inner workings of this most widely used "click" reaction (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2005, 44, p. 2210; and J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, p. 12696).

As a postdoctoral fellow with Professor J.M.J. Fréchet at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Rodionov applied the powerful “click” chemistry approach to the development of enzyme-inspired catalytic polymers (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, p. 2570).

Since late 2010, Dr. Rodionov has been an Assistant Professor of Chemical Science at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. IN 2018, The group transitioned to Case Western Reserve University.

Prof. Rodionov’s research interests are broadly focused on catalysis with soft materials and chemistry of nonbenzenoid allotropes of carbon (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2022, 144, p. 17999).

Michael T Ruggiero

Michael Ruggiero is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vermont in the United States. He received undergraduate degrees in chemistry and mathematics from the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Geneseo, and his Master’s and Ph.D. from Syracuse University, both in New York State. His doctoral work, performed under the guidance of Professor Timothy Korter, focused on combining experimental terahertz time-domain spectroscopy with ab initio density functional theory simulations, where he pursued the electronic origins of intermolecular forces in molecular crystals. Following a successful defense, he took up an EPSRC-sponsored postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, working with Professor Axel Zeitler in the Terahertz Applications Group. At Cambridge, his focus shifted to disordered molecular solids, with the goal of understanding the molecular dynamics responsible for solid-state crystallization of amorphous drugs. After almost three years in Cambridge, Ruggiero went back to America to take up a position of Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont, where he is currently combining theoretical simulations with experimental spectroscopy. His work is highly interdisciplinary, sitting at the intersection of chemistry, physics, pharmacy, materials science, and computer science, and as such he is a heavy collaborator with groups from around the world.

Edgardo Saucedo

Dr. Edgardo Saucedo studied Chemical Engineering at the University of the Republic, Montevideo, Uruguay, and received his PhD in Materials Physic at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain in 2007. In 2007, he joined the Institut de Recherche et Développement sur l’Énergie Photovoltaïque IRDEP (Paris, France), with a CNRS associated Researcher fellowship, working in the development and optoelectronic characterization of CIGS low cost based solar cells. In 2009, he joined NEXCIS, a spin-off created from IRDEP, to further pursue their training in photovoltaic technology. Currently, he is the Deputy Head of the Solar Energy Materials and Systems Laboratory at the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) in Barcelona, Spain. He holds four patents and has authored or co-authored more than 180 papers. He has more than 300 contributions to the most important Congresses in Physics, Chemistry and Materials, and more than 30 invited talks around the world. He has been involved in more than 15 European and Spanish Projects (Scalenano, Inducis, Pvicokest, KestPV, Larcis, etc.), and he was the coordinator of the ITN Marie Curie network Kestcell (www.kestcells.eu), and he is currently the coordinator of the research and innovation H2020 project STARCELL (www.starcell.eu), and the RISE (Marie Curie) project INFINITE-CELL (www.infinite-cell.eu). He has supervised ten (10) PhD Thesis and is currently supervising five (5) more. He has an h index of 31 (2019).
