Nicholas J Loman

Nick works as an Independent Research Fellow in the Institute for Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham, sponsored by an MRC Fellowship in Biomedical Informatics. His research explores the use of cutting-edge genomics and metagenomics approaches to the diagnosis, treatment and surveillance of infectious disease. Nick has so far used high-throughput sequencing to investigate outbreaks of important pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Acinetobacter baumannii and Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli. His current work focuses on the application of novel sequencing technologies such as the Oxford Nanopore for genome diagnosis and epidemiology of important pathogens, including most recently real-time surveillance of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. A more general aim is to develop bioinformatics tools to aid the interpretation of genome and metagenome-scale data in routine clinical practice in collaboration.

Raquel López-Antoñanzas

Raquel López-Antoñanzas is a CNRS researcher at the Institut des sciences de l'évolution (University of Montpellier). In 2004, she received her PhD from the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris (France). She works on the evolution of micromammals with a special focus on those from the Cenozoic of the Old World.

Gerton Lunter

My group is interested in investigating the processes of evolution and biology using computational methods. We apply machine learning methods (HMMs, Bayesian statistics, particle filters, deep learning) to large data sets to study for example human demographic history or non-coding functional elements in the genome.

Wagner Magalhães

Oceanographer with a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, USA and currently Assistant Professor of Zoology at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. Research interests include benthic ecology, trophic ecology and systematics, with special focus on taxonomy of annelid polychaetes.

Javier Manjarrez

He received a B.S. in Biology, M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Ecology from the
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM). He is currently a Professor of Biological Sciences at the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico. Most of his research interests have centered on the behavioral ecology of snakes and evolutionary processes that shape ecological diversity in sympatric species. Although he prefers working with snakes, his research has involved a variety of animals ranging from hylid frogs to domestic birds and mammals. Javier teaches courses in ecology, animal ecology, and statistics.

Julien GA Martin

I am generally interested in understanding the causes of variation in life history traits in wild populations, with particular on the causes and consequences of within-individual variation in life history. The focus of my research is the evolutionary ecology of reproductive strategies and understanding the impact of environmental variation on adaptation and evolution of traits.

Jesús Marugán-Lobón

Dr. Marugán-Lobón is a Paleobiologist from the Universidad autónoma of Madrid, Spain. He is an specialist in Geometric Morphometrics, and his research is focused in understanding macroevolutionary trends in vertebrates, and in particular, the dinosaur-bird transition. He belongs to the research staff of the Las Hoyas fossil site, is Research Associate of the Dinosaur Institute (NHM), and colaborates with the Theoretical Biology Lab, Cavanilles Institute of Biological Diversity and Evolution.

Jorg J.M. Massen

I am a comparative psychologist specializing in social cognition. Currently I work as an Assistant Professor at the Animal Behaviour and Cognition Group of Utrecht University (NL). My research mainly focuses on the proximate mechanisms underlying animal social relations, with special interest in cooperative and prosocial behaviours. For that I use both observational and experimental approaches. Moreover, to put my studies in an evolutionary perspective, I employ a broad comparative approach, focusing on a variety of primate and bird species.

Carla N Mavian

My research aims at understanding the eco-evolutionary pathways that lead to emergence and dispersal of zoonotic and human pathogens, with emphasis on land use and climate change, within the One Health approach. I employ genomics, metagenomics and phylodynamics as tools to elucidate the evolutionary processes and population dynamics that shape viral genetic diversity both at the inter-host (epidemics) and in intra-host level (individual infections).

Grant B McClelland

Professor of Biology at McMaster University, President of the Canadian Society of Zoologists (2019-2020).

My research focuses on the ontogeny, phenotypic plasticity and evolution of muscle metabolism - important for locomotion, thermogenesis, and whole-body metabolic homeostasis. I use mechanistic and evolutionary physiology approaches, and take advantage of "experiments in nature" by studying species that thrive in extreme environments such as high altitude. I do applied research on the impacts of changing temperature, low oxygen, and pollution on the physiology of fishes.
