Alvaro Montenegro

Alvaro Montenegro is from Brazil but has lived in North America since 1999. Alvaro's formal training is in Physical Oceanography and he obtained his MS from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and his PhD from Florida State University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Victoria (BC, Canada) where he started to change his focus from oceanography to climatology. After a period as assistant professor at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish (NS, Canada) he arrived at Ohio State University in 2012. Alvaro's current research interests encompass various aspects of climate change and climate variability, particularly physical and biogeochemical processes occurring at the global and continental spatial scales. Alvaro looks into these problems using mainly climate models but also employ observations. He has used models to address questions on a broad range of subjects from paleoclimate to climate policy, with a concentration on carbon cycle modeling. He is also interested in using paleoclimatic data to constrain archaeological and biogeographic theories.

Xosé Anxelu G. Morán

Research Professor at the Oceanographic Center of Gijón/Xixón (IEO, CSIC), Spain. I was Associate Professor of Marine Science, Red Sea Research Center, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, from 2014 to 2020 (currently adjunct). I joined the IEO in 2001 after my PhD training at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM, CSIC) in Barcelona. I am a biological oceanographer and microbial ecologist addressing the role of microbial plankton in biogeochemical carbon cycling from different perspectives. My research interests include the trophic relationships between phytoplankton and heterotrophic prokaryotes, the long-term dynamics of planktonic microorganisms and their response to global change, with particular emphasis on warming using the metabolic ecology framework. I combine experimental approaches with large-scale observations, both spatial and temporal, in order to predict the future direction and extent of change in the structure and functioning of marine microbial food webs.

I'm an assistant professor at Cleveland State University. My primary area of research is the ecology and biogeochemistry of temperate forests and grasslands, with an emphasis on plant-environment interactions. For example, I've studied the impacts of climate change, land management, and diversity loss on ecosystem functions of North American grasslands. I frequently use measures of plant functional traits or stable isotope ratios to better understand a variety of ecological concepts and biogeochemical processes, including how plants respond to the environment and interact with cycles of water, nutrients, and carbon.

David is a stable isotope ecologist. He studies diverse topics across various spatial and temporal scales, including the ecology and evolution of C4 grasses, bird and bat migration in the context of renewable-energy development, and forest and watershed biogeochemistry. He is also interested in the development of novel tools for isotopic analysis of small organic materials.

Donovan H Parks

Donovan Parks holds a PhD in computer science and has developed a number of bioinformatic programs used by the research community including CheckM, STAMP, and GenGIS. He has expertise in bioinformatics relating to microbial ecology, phylogenetics, and metagenome-assembled genomes. He is currently working as a bioinformatic consultant with the Australian Centre for Ecogenomics where he is working on an initiative to resolve long-standing issues within bacterial and archaeal nomenclature and developing new tools for reconstructing and validating genomes obtained directly from environmental samples.

My work broadly focuses on marine host-microbe systems, or ‘holobionts’, and the metabolic interactions that arise from and drive these complex symbiotic associations. I have always been interested in the microbial functions underlying holobiont health, resilience, and ecological adaptation, and how they shape holobiont stress responses. For this, I mainly use the cnidarian-algae symbiosis and associated bacteria as model systems, but have recently also started exploring the community structure, dynamics, and metabolic properties of fish skin microbiomes. My past and current research includes work on the contribution of nitrogen cycling pathways in cnidarian holobiont functioning and symbiotic breakdown, e.g., coral ‘bleaching’, as well as the elucidation of unknown functions of coral bacterial symbionts. For this, my approach has been to combine traditional physiological and culture-dependent techniques with high throughput-, next generation -omics applications, including whole genome and gene amplicon sequencing, transcriptomics, and proteomics. Currently, I am expanding my scope to targeted investigations of symbiotic metabolic interactions as a driver of osmoregulation in cnidarian holobionts employing nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) along with isotopic profiling metabolomics.

Professor in the Department of Hydrobiology of the Universidade Federal of São Carlos (UFSCar). Head of the Laboratory of Microbial Processes and Biodiversity, my research area is aquatic microbial ecology, with emphasis on biotic interactions, structure and function of planktonic communities in all compartments of the food web (viruses, bacteria, phytoplankton, zooplankton) mainly in tropical aquatic environments.

Laboratory Fellow at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and Lead Scientist at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a scientific user facility located at PNNL. Research interests emphasize coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical processes as they control water quality, ecosystem health, and contaminant transport and fate. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to perform integrated computational and experimental research across a wide range of physical scales from molecules and cells to aquifers and watersheds. Was selected by the National Ground Water Association to serve as the 2010 Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer, in which role he presented 65 invited lectures across North America and Europe.

Dr. Tanvir Shahzad is an Associate Professor at the Government College University, Faisalabad. He is an environmental scientist with a PhD in Agronomy, Ecology, Biogeochemistry from AgroParisTech.

Dr. Shahzad's research focuses on the intersections of soil biology, soil ecology, and use and assessment of nanomaterials for the benefit and sustainability of soils, more specifically, he is currently working on making Pakistan's soils sustainable.

Jonathan (Josh) Sharp is an Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. Dr. Sharp’s research focuses on the ramifications of biological processes as they relate to water quality with an approach that integrates facets of microbiology, engineering, biogeochemistry and hydrology to enhance our understanding of the natural and built environment. Professor Sharp obtained his PhD from UC Berkeley in Civil and Environmental Engineering and conducted postdoctoral studies at EPFL, Switzerland before joining Mines.
