BSc (Hons) University of Ulster, PhD Liverpool University. Postdoc and NERC Advanced Research Fellow at Warwick University. I have been at the University of Waikato since 2004 and was promoted to Professor in 2018. My research has focused on the microbial ecology of methane oxidation, Antarctica and geothermal environments in New Zealand. In Antarctica we are studying the drivers of microbial diversity in Dry Valley soils, geothermal environments (Mts Erebus, Melbourne and Rittmann), and terrestrial meltwater ponds. Currently ‘The 1000 Spring project’ is determining drivers of microbial diversity in NZ geothermal environments. I have organized several NZ and international conferences, I am currently the Chief Officer of SCAR Life Sciences.

Nuno A Silva

Nuno Silva completed his BSc in Applied Biology (2007) and received is PhD in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells from the University of Minho in 2012. His PhD work consisted on the development of novel approaches for Spinal Cord Injury Repair (SCI) based on biodegradable materials and stem cells. His PhD was carried out in the 3B’s Research Group and in the Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research of the University of Toronto. In 2012 he started a post-doc at ICVS dedicated to study the best therapeutic combination to treat the injured spinal cord.

In 2014 he was able to capture national competitive funding and started his own lab. Currently, his team is fully focused on research about SCI, from solving fundamental questions about how SCI affect the systemic immune response to design technological advanced therapies to treat this condition. The team is presently constituted by 1 post-doctoral fellows, 1 MD-PhD student and 5 PhD students.

He is currently an author of 44 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals and is an author of two patents. Nuno Silva has currently more than 2700 citations and an h-index of 23. Additionally he is author of 7 book chapters and has more than 60 communications in national and international conferences. He supervises/supervised 25 post-graduation students. Finally, during his research career, Nuno Silva was able to capture more than two million euros of competitive funding, either in research projects (1.8M) or salary grants (438K). He was honored with international funding from the Wings For Life Foundation and the La Caixa Foundation.

I am from Brazil, where I obtained a degree in Oceanography from the Univ. do Rio Grande. I then finished a Masters and a PhD in Oceanography at Oregon State Univ under the co-supervision of Ev and Barry Sherr and Steve Giovannoni working on the effects of protist bacterivory on bacterioplankton community structure. Next I worked at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Inst. supervised by Ed DeLong on topics including the analysis of bacterioplankton (BP) diversity, the development of real-time PCR for genes and mRNAs, and BP metagenomics, and the biology of photoheterotrophs in the Ocean. I was hired as an Assistant Professor at the Chesapeake Biological Lab where I led research on the diversity, phylogeny and activity of BP, measurements of PB gene expression in situ biology and microbial processes leading to methylmercury production by bacteria.

Since May 2009, I am a Professor At the Observatoire Océanologique de Banyuls and the head of the Microbial Biodiversity and Biotechnology Unit and the Scientific advisor of the Bio2Mar platform of the OOB. I lead research on the biology of photoheterotrophs in the Ocean, and the ecology and genomics of, and the exploitation of, marine microorganisms for biotechnological purposes. My main interests are the connection betweem specific bacterioplankton activity and marine biogeochemical cycles, microbial biotechnology, the biology of photoheterotrophy, and chemical interactions of microbes in symbiosis.

On 2010 he finished the Post Doctoral course in Biomedical and Methodological Aspects of Preventive and Adapted Physical Activities at University of Rome "Foro Italico". During his career, he deepened his knowledge and scientific and clinical skills in the fields of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences focusing on the effects of different Training Program on health in Obese and Older subjects. Since 2009 he has taught as expert in the subject at University of Rome "Foro Italico", then in 2016 as a holder of single courses and integrated courses at the University of Catanzaro "Magna Graecia".The number of publications on indexed peer-reviewed journals with Impact Factor (41 since 2008) and the number of citations received from them (483) shows his high albeit young scientific activity. In 2017 he obtained the MIUR grant (FFABR). He is a member of the Editorial Board of the “Motricidade” , “PeerJ" and "Austin Sports Medicine" journals. Moreover, he is the Reviewer of several international journals, such as Eating and Weight Disorders and International Journal of Sports Medicine.
