Jason Ernst

Jason joined the faculty at UCLA in the Department of Biological Chemistry, the Computer Science Department, and the Bioinformatics Program in 2012. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral fellow in Manolis Kellis' Computational Biology Group in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT and affiliated with the Broad Institute. In 2008, Jason completed a PhD advised by Ziv Bar-Joseph where he was part of the Systems Biology Group, Machine Learning Department, and School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Jason also earned BS degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Maryland College Park. He is a member of the editorial board at Genome Research and has been a program co-chair for the ISMB Regulatory Genomics Special Interest Group (RegGenSIG) meeting. He is a recipient of a Sloan Fellowship, NSF Career Award, NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship, a Siebel Scholarship, and a Goldwater Scholarship.

Heidi Steltzer

Environmental scientist, explorer and science storyteller. She researchers how environmental changes affect mountain watersheds and the Arctic system, and their links to human well-being. She is an Associate Professor of Biology, Fort Lewis College. She is on the leadership team for Homeward Bound, an organization developing leadership for women in STEM. Founder of the Colorado Mountain Center. member American Geophysical Union.

Zhijin Wu

I develop statistical methodology and software for the analysis of -omics data. I am particularly interested in the regulation of transcription: the molecular mechanism as well as its association with disease.

Ruth Propper

Dr. Ruth E. Propper is a Professor in the Psychology Department at Montclair State University, where she is the director of the Cerebral Lateralization Laboratory. After receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Toledo in Cognitive Neuropsychology, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Mental Health Research Center, Laboratory of Neurophysiology, Harvard Medical School, in the laboratory of Drs. Allan Hobson and Robert Stickgold. There, she studied the role of sleep and dreaming on memory consolidation. She was also a Visiting Researcher in the Golby Laboratory: A Surgical Brain Mapping Laboratory, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, examining individual differences in handedness effects on brain organization. ​

Propper has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles, 2 book chapters, and more than 50 presentations at national and international conferences. She extensively mentors undergraduate and graduate research students, training more than 50 students in her laboratory over the course of her career to date.

Margaret J. Kovach

My primary research interest is in mammalian genomics: the identification and functional characterization of genes. In particular, I am interested in genome organization and chromatin structure and their influences on nuclear functions such as DNA replication, chromosome segregation and gene expression. This is an extremely exciting field of research that has become practical and manageable with the completion of the human and mouse genome sequencing projects.

Michele Clamp

Graduated from Oxford University in physics and proceeded to a physics PhD at Manchester University. Saw the light and came over to biology through protein structure prediction into genome annotation. Founded the Ensembl database alongside Ewan Birney and Tim Hubbard at the Sanger Institute. Crossed the pond to the Broad Institute where many mammals were sequenced and the human gene count trimmed of its fat. Had a short enjoyable interlude in the commercial sphere at Bioteam and is now residing at Harvard University with fingers in many pies.

Rex Victor Cruz

Rex Victor O. Cruz, PhD is a full professor and UP Scientist III at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). He obtained his bachelor and masteral degrees in forestry at UPLB and his doctoral degree at the University of Arizona.

His specialization include forestry, watershed management, environmental management, ecosystem and landscape management, upland development and climate change.

He is a former dean of the CFNR (2007-2011) and Chancellor of UPLB (2011-2014). He was also a member of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1992-1995; 1997-2000; and 2004-2007. Currently he is a member of the Asia Pacific Forestry Network Board of Directors and on the Editorial Board of several journals. He is also the Program and Project Leader of MODECERA (Monitoring and Detection of Ecosystem Changes for Resiliency and Adaptation), INWARD (Integrated Watershed Research and Development Project), and National Conservation Farming Village (CFV) Program.

Brian T Glazer

The long-term vision that drives our research is to develop an understanding of the synergy between geochemical processes and microbial diversity and function. In pursuit of this over-arching goal, it is also a high priority to minimize sampling artifacts for measuring many (micro)biologically important chemical species in the environment through further development of in situ measurement techniques and instrumentation.
