Sherif Ashraf Fahmy

Dr. Sherif Ashraf Fahmy obtained his B. Pharm with honors from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, and his MSc (2015) and Ph. D. (2020) in Chemistry from The American University in Cairo. His Ph. D. was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Pharmaceutics & Biopharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany. Dr. Fahmy was selected as one of the first recipients of the prestigious and very competitive fellowship offered by the Alfi Foundation for Ph.D. students. He has also spent time as a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy, Philipps University of Marburg, Germany, in 2018.

He has received several other awards and recognitions, most notably, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC, UK) Travel Grant for Ph.D. students & Early Career Scientists in 2019, the Fulbright Scholarship at Ohio University in 2019, USA, and the Mobility Grant to participate in the Research Opportunity Week (ROW) organized by the Technical University of Munich in 2022. Dr. Fahmy has published several peer-reviewed articles in international journals and many abstracts at local and international conferences (H- index of 15). Dr. Fahmy’s research focuses on exploring novel herbal medicine, extracting and characterizing their major active ingredients, and investigating their anticancer activities. In addition, Dr. Fahmy’s research encompasses the design, physicochemical characterization, and biological evaluation of innovative targeted and functionalized drug delivery systems to treat cancer effectively. These systems are based on several nanomaterials, including but not limited to polymeric nanoparticles, naovesicles (niosomes, liposomes, bilosomes, etc.), supramolecular nanocontainers (calixarenes, cucurbiturils, cyclodextrins), and metallic nanoparticles.

Also, Dr. Fahmy is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), the American Chemical Society (ACS), and ESMO. Also, he serves as a reviewer for many international journals. Dr. Fahmy is a full-time Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the School of Life & Medical Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, Egypt Campus. Also, he is the Head and Founder of the Herbal Medicine & Nanotherapeutics research group at the same university.

Olayomi Abiodun Falowo

Dr. Olayomi Falowo is an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Landmark University, Omu-Aran. With a passion for nano-material synthesis and characterization as well as heterogeneous catalyst development. Dr. Falowo brings a wealth of academic expertise and a commitment to fostering a dynamic learning environment.

Dr. Falowo earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University Nigeria and has since been dedicated to advancing knowledge in nano-material development and heterogeneous catalysis. His research interests include the synthesis of base heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production, the synthesis of nano-magnetic acidic catalysts for biomass hydrolysis, and the development of nano-adsorbent for adsorption.

He has published extensively in reputable journals such as Renewable Energy, Fuel, Chemical Engineering & Processing, Energy Conversion and Management. Further, he has contributed to the writing of several books published in both local and international press. Dr. Falowo is also actively involved in the Nigeria Society of Chemical Engineers as well as the team lead for the SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) research cluster at Landmark University and has presented his work at numerous national and international conferences.

Beyond academia, Dr. Falowo has contributed to the university community through the University Examination Board and the University Grant Seeking Committee, reflecting his commitment to collaborative governance and the overall well-being of the academic community. He is also actively involved in mentoring students, and guiding them in their academic and professional pursuits.

Junkuo Gao

Dr. Junkuo Gao is professor at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, China. He obtained his PhD in Zhejiang University, China in 2010. Then, he worked at Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) as a postdoctor. In 2013, he joined the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University as Distinguished professor of Zhejiang Province, director of Institute of New Energy Fiber Materials. His research interest is metal-organic frameworks based nanomaterials for clean energy and green chemistry applications. He has published more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as J. Am. Chem. Soc., Small, Coord. Chem. Rev., J. Mater. Chem. A etc. with more than 8900 citations and a H-index of 49.

Steven N Girard

Steven N. Girard is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, where he teaches general and inorganic chemistry courses. He earned undergraduate degrees in chemistry and music from Lawrence University and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Northwestern University, and later was an NSF Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability Postdoctoral Fellow at UW–Madison. Buoyed by astute and enthusiastic undergraduate researchers, the Girard lab at UWW investigates nanostructured thermoelectric materials, sustainable synthesis of inorganic and nanostructured compounds, innovative new ways of blowing things up, and flux chemistry.

Omar Gonzalez-Ortega

I have a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from The University of Arizona. My research experience is centered in two topics: purification of biomolecules and bionanotechnology. Sometimes I perform simulation of chemical and biochemical processes.

Kwan San Hui

Prof. Kwan San Hui has over 18 years of experience in the study of nanostructured catalytic materials for energy and environmental applications and has published work in over 230 SCI papers (Scopus; h-index: 56). He has 1 United States (US) patent (US9040007B2) and licensing to 3 companies in Hong Kong.

He has so far supervised 18 PhD and 26 MPhil students, 17 PDRAs and 13 RAs. Many of the ex-members are engineers in the industry and hold faculty positions at Universities in China. He has been maintaining a large consortium to better understand and address the research problems, including partners from international-leading universities: UCLA, Uni. of Western, Cambridge, Leeds, Kent, Cardiff, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shandong Uni., Xiamen, Uppsala, Hanyang Uni., among others.

His recent research projects include (i) theoretical and experimental studies of heterogeneous catalytic reaction kinetics and mechanisms; (ii) rational design and synthesis of single-atom Co/carbon and porous graphene materials for energy storage and conversion; (iii) density functional theory (DFT) calculations of structural and electronic properties of catalysts, modulated by dopants, in electrochemical/electrocatalysis performance; (iv) process modelling and optimisation of methanol steam reforming for hydrogen production; and (v) hybrid sodium-air batteries (HSABs), zinc-air batteries, and solid-state flexible Li/Na-ion batteries.

Jose Isagani B. Janairo

Dr. J.I. Janairo is a Professor at the Department of Biology at De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines. His research focuses on bionanotechnology, specifically on the utilization of peptides for nanomaterial synthesis and machine learning - aided materials design. He received his BS Biochemistry (hons) and MS Chemistry degrees at De La Salle University, and PhD Chemical Sciences at Hokkaido University as a Japanese Government scholar. Apart from PeerJ Materials Science, he is also an editor for the Scopus-indexed journal Network Modeling Analysis in Health Informatics and Bioinformatics published by Springer Nature. He is one of the lead authors of the Global Environment Outlook - 6 for youth in the Asia-Pacific published by the United Nations Environment Programme. For his environmental contributions, he was one of the recipients of the 2019 ASEAN Youth Eco-Champion Award given by the ASEAN Environment Ministers during the 15th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment held in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

James Robert Jennings

Dr Jennings obtained his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Bath, United Kingdom in 2009. From 2009 to 2014 he worked as Research Fellow and then Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the National University of Singapore. In mid-2014 he was appointed as Lecturer in Applied Physics at Universiti Brunei Darussalam and has since been promoted to Senior Assistant Professor and Deputy Dean (Graduate Studies & Research) of the Faculty of Science at the same institution. His research to date has included characterization and modelling of mesoscopic solar cells (mainly dye-sensitized solar cells and more recently organic and perovskite solar cells), solar water splitting cells and water oxidation electrocatalysts, photocatalysts for environmental remediation, redox flow Li-ion batteries, and novel electrochromic devices.

Thomas Kodger

Thomas completed his PhD from Harvard University in 2015 under Prof. David Weitz and postdoctoral studies from University of Amsterdam with Prof. Peter Schall. He is currently an assistant professor in the Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter laboratory at Wageningen University & Research in The Netherlands having joined in 2017.

Jui-Yang Lai

Dr. Jui-Yang Lai received his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemical Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. Since 2014, he is a Full Professor at Chang Gung University, Taiwan. Dr. Lai’s primary research activities are centered on the design and development of functional biomaterials, either from natural or synthetic sources, for ophthalmic use, particularly on tissue engineering, drug delivery, and nanomedicine. His major research projects involve ocular biocompatibility assessment, corneal/retinal cell construct fabrication, topical/intraocular pharmaceutical dosage formulation, and metallic/carbon-based nanotherapeutics evaluation. Dr. Lai has published more than 100 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and filed numerous patent applications. He actively participates in the peer review process for scientific publications and also serves as a member of the editorial board of several scholarly journals.
