Jürg Bähler

Jürg Bähler is a Professor of Systems Biology at University College London. His laboratory studies genome regulation during cellular proliferation, quiescence, and ageing using fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) as a model system. They apply multiple genetic, computational and genome-wide approaches for systems-level understanding of regulatory processes and complex relationships between genotype, phenotype, and environment, including roles of genome variation and evolution, transcriptome regulation, and non-coding RNAs.

Jürg Bähler is an elected Member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, and he received a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award and a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award.

Her research interest includes in vivo oriented modelling, molecular mechanisms of higher-functions of central nerve systems, microfluidics technology and optical technologies and informatics for bioimaging.

I am a medical doctor and a systems biologist. During my scientific carrier, I have tried to understand diseases and find novel approaches to treat them with drugs, whether it is cancer or UC. I finished the Semmelweis University Doctor of Medicine course on 2012 and then started my PhD in network biology. I was involved in developing multiple biological network databases transcription factor-target layers such as SignaLink, AutophagyRegulatory Network or the NRF2Ome. My main project was to understand signalling networks in cancer and how the different paralogues of a protein can act in the signalling network.

Since then I have been a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Cambridge University, where my main focus was how can we use networks to predict mechanisms of action of compound combinations. I used various chemical informatics techniques besides network biology such as chemical fingerprints, machine learning and gene expression-based toxicity prediction.

Currently, I am working at the Earlham Institute and Quadram Institut in Norwich researching inflammatory bowel disease and using network biology to decipher the pathogenesis of complex disorders.

I have recently moved to Imperial College, London to go through the therapeutic celling in IBD using systems biology.

Vera Pancaldi

I was trained as a physicist at Imperial College London and soon found my way in systems and computational biology. Since 2018 I lead a computational biology team at the Cancer Research Center of Toulouse (CRCT) working on modelling cancer and its interactions with the immune system.

I have worked on various projects on stress response in fission yeast and prediction of protein interactions (in the group of Jurg Bahler at Sanger Institute/University College London), epigenomics and hybrid vigour in plants (with David Baulcombe at Cambridge University) and integrative epigenomics in cancer (with Alfonso Valencia at CNIO, Madrid and Barcelona Supercomputing Center). My main current focus is understanding the relationship between genome architecture and heterogeneity at various levels and relating heterogeneity of tumour infiltrating immune cells to patient's prognoses in different cancers. I also co-founded Cambridge Networks Network in 2011, an online forum for scientists interested in networks in Cambridge in beyond.

Through high performance technologies for DNA sequencing and computational data analysis, I investigate the effects of pollution on fauna, using fish as model organisms, and their responses and genetic adaptations to pollutants, especially those involved in the xenobiotic biotransformation system.
