Huan-Tsung Chang

Professor Huan-Tsung Chang was born in Chung-Hua, Taiwan in 1962. He graduated from Iowa State University, USA in 1994 and became an associate professor and a professor in the Department of Chemistry, National Taiwan University, Taiwan in 1996 and 2001, respectively.

His research focuses on preparation of functional gold nanoparticles for control of enzyme activity and for the detection of metal ions, proteins, and DNA. A number of fluorescent gold, silver and copper nanomaterials have been synthesized and used for sensitive and selective for cell imaging and for the detection of various analytes, including anions, metal ions, proteins, and DNA. Carbon nanodots and fluorescent polymeric spheres have been synthesized and applied for cell imaging in his group. In addition, he has developed nanoparticle based mass spectrometry techniques for the detection of polysaccharides, proteins, small analytes, and DNA. His research interests also include surface enhanced Raman scattering, fuel cells, removal of contaminants using nanomaterials, and capillary electrophoresis.

Professor Chang is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He was awarded the Academic Achievement Award, Chinese Chemical Society in 2015, and the Prof. Rudolph A. Marcus Award 2017. He has been named a 2017 Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate Analytics).

James Robert Jennings

Dr Jennings obtained his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Bath, United Kingdom in 2009. From 2009 to 2014 he worked as Research Fellow and then Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the National University of Singapore. In mid-2014 he was appointed as Lecturer in Applied Physics at Universiti Brunei Darussalam and has since been promoted to Senior Assistant Professor and Deputy Dean (Graduate Studies & Research) of the Faculty of Science at the same institution. His research to date has included characterization and modelling of mesoscopic solar cells (mainly dye-sensitized solar cells and more recently organic and perovskite solar cells), solar water splitting cells and water oxidation electrocatalysts, photocatalysts for environmental remediation, redox flow Li-ion batteries, and novel electrochromic devices.

Alexey Kabalnov

Vincenzo Naddeo

Dr. Naddeo is associate professor at Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Salerno (Italy) where he drives research activities as Director of the Sanitary Environmental Engineering Division (SEED).

He is co-founding Chair of the conference series WaterEnergyNEXUS and is actively involved in a variety of scientific organizations, funding agencies, and European networks.

His research focuses on water/wastetater treatment, recovery of energy form waste, control of environmental odors and environmental impact assessment (EIA). He developed advanced biological processes for wastewater treatment and control of emerging contaminants, novel ultrasound-based technological processes for the treatment of environmental matrices (solid, liquid and gaseous) and biotechnologies for wastewater re-use with simultaneous energy production.

In addition to the topics above, Dr. Naddeo has published works on membrane bioreactors (MBRs), Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), river water quality characterization, remediation of contaminated soil, management & treatment of the organic fraction of solid waste, strategic environmental assessment (SEA) & recently on the environmental technologies for the sustainable development of smart cities.

Jeremiah J Gassensmith

Jeremiah's research focuses on several areas:

Development of stimuli responsive "smart" biomaterials
Creating new thermosalient molecular crystalline materials
Using metal-organic frameworks for native protein (i.e. drug) delivery
Supramolecular and macromolecular organic radical contrast agents as MRI sensors

Valentin O Rodionov

Prof. Valentin Rodionov began his undergraduate studies in 1997 at the Higher Chemical College of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2000, after moving to the United States, he was accepted to the University of Maryland and promoted directly into the graduate program without having to complete an undergraduate degree. He earned his M.S. in 2002 and enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA.

At Scripps Dr. Rodionov worked under the guidance of Profs. M.G. Finn and K.B. Sharpless. His thesis project was focused on mechanistic investigation of copper (I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition and provided the first glimpse of the inner workings of this most widely used "click" reaction (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2005, 44, p. 2210; and J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, p. 12696).

As a postdoctoral fellow with Professor J.M.J. Fréchet at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Rodionov applied the powerful “click” chemistry approach to the development of enzyme-inspired catalytic polymers (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, p. 2570).

Since late 2010, Dr. Rodionov has been an Assistant Professor of Chemical Science at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. IN 2018, The group transitioned to Case Western Reserve University.

Prof. Rodionov’s research interests are broadly focused on catalysis with soft materials and chemistry of nonbenzenoid allotropes of carbon (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2022, 144, p. 17999).

Nicholas Marshall

Visiting Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry, Berea College, 2013-2015. Currently Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry, USC Aiken. Editor of RSC's ChemSpider Synthetic Pages. Our interdisciplinary research group develops new reactions and techniques for modifying materials, solving problems in energy, sensing, and consumer-facing products.

Antonio Pereira Gonçalves

Dr. António Pereira Gonçalves is a Coordinator Researcher of the Department of Engineering and Nuclear Sciences of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon University. He obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 1996 at IST, on intermetallic uranium compounds. His research interests are in the fields of Solid State Chemistry, Materials Science, Exploratory synthesis, Phase diagram studies, Crystal growth, Design of new materials, Nanostructured materials, Actinide and Rare Earth Intermetallics, Oxides, Pnictide and Chalcogenide compounds, Strongly Correlated Electronic Systems, Thermoelectric materials and Nuclear materials for peaceful applications. Currently, he is working on uranium compounds for fundamental and applied studies and on compounds and thermoelectric systems for waste heat recovery. Dr. António Pereira Gonçalves has authored or co-authored more than 250 publications in peer review journals, having more than 350 conference presentations (22 invited). Since 2017 he is the President of the Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies (C2TN), a Research Unit of IST.

Matthew J Powell-Palm

Dr. Matthew Powell-Palm is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering / Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M, working on matters of core materials thermodynamics, phase change processes, cryopreservation, and low-temperature aqueous physics writ large.

Andres W Martinez

I received my BS in chemistry from Stanford University and my PhD in chemistry from Harvard University, with George Whitesides. My research is focused on the development of low-cost point-of-care diagnostic devices, which involves analytical chemistry, paper-based microfluidics, fabrication, materials science and engineering.
