Dr. Nicholas D. Pyenson is a research geologist and curator of fossil marine mammals at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia. As a paleontologist, his scientific research focuses on the repeated and convergent evolution of marine life, including iconic lineages such as sea turtles, sea cows, and especially whales.
I am an ecologist who uses a multidisciplinary approach to understand and conserve biodiversity through space and time. I earned my Ph.D. from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Brazil and served as a Research Scientist at the Ohio State University. I previously conducted post-doctoral work at other institutions, including the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and São Paulo University. I joined the U in 2024 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology where I established the BioScales Lab. My lab focuses on exploring: (1) patterns and processes of biodiversity dynamics across space and time, (2) ecological interactions, and (3) effects of global change on biodiversity. To investigate these themes, we integrate theoretical concepts, statistical tools, and field-based methods across multiple scales.
Dr. Arnold Rakaj works at the Laboratory of Experimental Ecology and Aquaculture at the University of Rome Tor Vergata where is carrying out basic and applied research on marine invertebrates and their role in the benthic dynamics.
I work on insect ecology focusing in plant-insect interactions from a perspective that addresses proximal (ecological) and distal (evolutionary) causes. This approach aims to contribute to the knowledge of the herbivory patterns observed in natural and productive systems. Regarding proximal causes, I have a particular interest in the behavioral mechanisms that insect uses to feed on host plants, this includes how they deal with plant defense (either in crops or native plants). In relation to distal causes, I am interested in the correlation or experimental association between traits and reproductive outputs over generations. I have been studying hemipteran insects of the family Aphididae, which constitute important crop pests in Chile. Aphids are the group of insects that I have study the most. That are a good model to address fundamental questions in biology and also are a real problem for plant production. I do also enjoy to contribute with ideas aimed to reduce the use of pesticides in agroecosystems. The relationship between agrecosystem and natural areas are also an area that I intend to explore.
I am Assistant Professor at the University of Agriculture, Pakistan. My research currently focuses on the diversity of arthropods, particularly insects in different agroecological zones. I am also interested for the monitoring of wildlife and their conservational aspects. I am interested in the conservation of insects and the ecological balance that insects impose on the ecosystem. I also have a lot of experience in agricultural entomology as well as studying different landscapes. In addition to this I have documented the insects of different agricultural cropland of Punjab Pakistan.
Mike is a tenured Research Professor at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, and is a member of the graduate faculty with the Departments of Oceanography, Microbiology, and the interdisciplinary Marine Biology Graduate Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The overarching theme of his research is to understand the impact of microbial genetic diversity on ocean ecology, and interpret this diversity through the lens of bacterial taxonomy and evolution. He investigates the ecology and evolution of marine microorganisms by combining surveys of natural microbial communities, nucleic acid sequence data, and studies with model systems in controlled laboratory settings.
James Davis Reimer's research focuses on the biodiversity of understudied marine invertebrate groups (so-called "minor taxa"), primarily benthic cnidarians including zoantharians and their endosymbionts, as well as octocorals, from shallow tropical coral reefs to the deep sea. Recent research has also examined the impact of coastal development on marine diversity and ecosystems. Since 2007, he has been based at the University of the Ryukyus, where he is now a professor.
In 2015, he was awarded the Okinawa Research Prize for science contributing to the well-being and understanding of the Ryukyu Islands, and in 2021, he was awarded the Narishige Prize by the Zoological Society of Japan in recognition of his unique research output.
Leslie Ries is an ecologist who focuses on patterns at both medium and large scales. She has worked both in the fields of landscape ecology and biogeography with her focus mainly on butterflies. Over the last 10 years, she has shifted from a field approach to using large databases, mostly originating from citizen science monitoring networks.
Dr. Luiz F. W. Roesch is an Associate Professor within the Department of Microbiology and Cell Science at the University of Florida.
Dr. Roesch is microbial ecologist working with biomarkers of health and disease in human samples and of homeostasis or perturbation in environmental models. His research focuses on testing fundamental hypotheses in microbial ecology, especially in the Human Microbiome.
Dr. Roesch's primary expertise is in Next Generation Sequencing, Bioinformatics, and 16S rRNA surveys.
I am broadly interested in the molecular ecology of invasive species, conservation genetics, avian behaviour, the genetics of social systems and how genes behave at a population level. Much of my work has focused on the role of dispersal in range expansions and the use of genetic analyses to understand contemporary population dynamics including rates of exchange between genetically separated populations. I am now investigating genes important to dispersal in order to examine the role of genetics in range expansion of invasive species.
I am an ethnobiologist and interdisciplinary conservation scientist. I have two masters degrees in Zoology (ethology) and Conservation, Biodiversity and Management, and a PhD in Ecology. During my degrees and several post-docs I developed competencies in social sciences methods and human geography and anthropological theory. I have worked in Chile since 2008, developing socio-ecological approaches to conservation, restoration, and rewilding. In addition, I have done fieldwork-based research projects in Denmark, Italy, and Lesotho.
