Degree in Meteorology from University of São Paulo (1983), Master in Oceanography (Physical Oceanography) from University of São Paulo (1989) and PhD from University of Southampton, England (1994). In 1995 held postdoctoral activities in the Oceanographic Institute at USP. Experience in Physical Oceanography and Meteorology, with emphasis on numerical modelling and in situ observations of air-sea interaction (oceanic and atmospheric turbulence) and micrometeorology (Planetary boundary layer, turbulence, radiation and energy balances, turbulent fluxes). Study of the atmosphere and ocean in Equatorial and Antarctic regions.
Prof. Sokona is currently Special Advisor for Sustainable Development at the South Centre. With over 35 years of experience addressing energy, environment and sustainable development in Africa. Reflecting his status, Prof. Sokona was elected Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in October 2015. Prior to this, Prof. Sokona was Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group III on the mitigation of climate change for the Fifth Assessment Report after serving as a Lead Author since 1990. In addition to these achievements, Prof. Sokona has a proven track record of organisational leadership and management, for example, leading the conception, development and initiating the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative, as the first Coordinator of the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) and as Executive Secretary of the Sahara and the Sahel Observatory (OSS). Prof. Sokona’s advice is highly sought after, and as such, he is affiliated with numerous boards and organisations, including the Board for the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Honorary Professor at the University College London (UCL), Member of Science Advisory Committee of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and as a Special Advisor to the African Energy Leaders Group. In short, Prof. Sokona is a global figure, with deep technical knowledge, extensive policy experience and an unreserved personal commitment to African led development.

Vice President for Research & Economic Development, Charles and Hilda Roddey Distinguished Professor in Chemical Engineering and Ike East Professor in Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University. Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Recipient of AIChE/ACS Charles E Coates award in 2012. Research area is in environmental chemical engineering. He has broad research experience in wastewater treatment, atmospheric chemistry and, modeling the fate and transport of contaminants in all three environmental media (air, water and soil/sediment). Present research is concerned with the transformations of pollutants on atmospheric aerosols (fog, rain, ice and snow), mercury sequestration in sediments and, studies on chemical dispersant design for sub-sea oil/gas spill. He is the author of 1 widely accepted textbook (with four editions), 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, 27 book chapters and 2 U.S. patents. He has made over 250 national and international presentations and 28 invited seminars and plenary lectures on his research. His research has been supported by the NSF, EPA, DOE, DOD, USGS and several private industries.
Dr. Wallen earned a B.S. and Ph.D. from the Univ. of Illinois. He studied supercritical fluids at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory using a variety of spectroscopic techniques including NMR, XAFS, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The author of over 50 refereed papers his work has been highlighted in Science and C&E News. He has served as a reviewer for top journals and government science panels. Dr. Wallen is currently on the staff at Florida Polytechnic University. His research interests are on the development/implementation of green nanotechnology, chemistry and sustainable processes applied to materials synthesis, remediation, recycling and chemical analysis. Projects converting biomass to carbon quantum dots for sensing and electronics; nanophotocatalytic oxidation of wastewater; and use of carbohydrates (biogenics) for nanomaterials preparation are ongoing as are development of microvolume, high-pressure continuous flow systems (HP-CFS) to prepare and analyze functional, sustainable nanomaterials. He recently developed the concept of a circular economy paradigm for implementing university science laboratories which led to an Award for Innovation in 2016 by the Campus Safety, Health & Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA). At the 21st Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference Dr. Wallen won the 2017 Applied Separations Prime Grant for commitment to teaching Supercritical Fluids. In his spare time he enjoys his family, playing music and outdoor activities.

His research interests include the effects of climate change and human activities on water environment, water-energy-carbon nexus, and resource management.
