Effects of preservation method on canine (Canis lupus familiaris) fecal microbiota (2018) PeerJ

Konstantinos Kormas –– Sampling and handling of samples is very crucial in -omics based studies and very often the necessary attention is not met in publiched works. Such studies are necessary... Read more

Clinical streptococcal isolates, distinct from Streptococcus pneumoniae, but containing the β-glucosyltransferase tts gene and expressing serotype 37 capsular polysaccharide

Editor rating: 7 / 10

Padmapriya Banada –– This article demonstrates clinical streptococcal isolates, which are different from Strep. pneumoniae expressing the pneumococcal serotype 37 which make them pathogenic. This is an important discovery since it can benefit all facets of diagnostics, drug discovery and vaccine development. The study is thorough and used sequencing and bioinformatic tools to show the variations in streptococcal species to conclusively demonstrate the genetic similarities and variations. Further testing can confirm the pathogenicity of these isolates.
Construction of a fur null mutant and RNA-sequencing provide deeper global understanding of the Aliivibrio salmonicida Fur regulon

Editor rating: 7 / 10

Rüdiger Ettrich –– I am convinced that the article indeed contributes to a deeper global understanding of the Aliivibrio salmonicida Fur regulon and reaches out to the adjacent disciplines. Thus the statement in the title is not overstated but indeed advertises the findings in this paper.
Penetrance of symbiont-mediated parthenogenesis is driven by reproductive rate in a parasitoid wasp

Editor rating: 7 / 10

Joseph Gillespie –– It adds an important dimension to understanding the role of reproductive rate on the ability of Wolbachia to induce parthenogenesis

Editor rating: 7 / 10

Mauricio Rodriguez-Lanetty –– This study presents interesting data that show how some coral-associated microbes have the capacity to protect their host by predating on alien bacteria.
