German Conference on Bioinformatics 2016 Collection - hosted on PeerJ

Editorial

The "GCB 2016 Collection" contains research work that is presented at the German Conference on Bioinformatics (GCB) 2016 at Campus Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin), September 12-15, 2016. All papers were peer-reviewed by the conference's Program Committee and/or by external reviewers, and poster abstracts and junior research group presentations have been checked for suitability to GCB.

The German Conference on Bioinformatics (GCB) is an annual, international conference dedicated to all areas of bioinformatics and theoretical systems biology. Being one of the oldest annual bioinformatics meetings in Europe, this year's edition is already the 22nd since 1995.

GCB 2016 is organised by the bioinformatics groups of the FU Berlin, the Konrad Zuse Institute, the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics and the Robert Koch Institute in cooperation with the advisory board of the joint special interest group Bioinformatics ("Fachgruppe Bioinformatik", FaBI) of the German Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (DECHEMA), the Society for Computer Science (GI), the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM), the Society of German Chemists (GDCh), and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie e.V. (GMDS) .

The conference encompasses three days of keynote lectures, contributed talks, poster sessions and a novel R&D session. An additional forth day, scheduled before the main event, will provide tutorials that offer hands-on experience in computational biology. As distinguished keynote speakers, Niko Beerenwinkel (ETH, Switzerland), Uwe Ohler (MDC, Germany), Marie-France Sagot (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, France), Michael Stumpf (Imperial College London, UK) and Francesca Ciccarelli (King's College London, UK) have been invited to deliver a talk about their cutting-edge research.

The conference is sponsored by Intel and supported by a number of benefactors listed below. We would like to express our sincerest "Thank You" to all those who support or help to organize the conference, as well as to all participants who will make GCB 2016 a success.
