PeerJ expands its scope and introduces a refreshed website experience
To foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and amplify research impact, Taylor & Francis has expanded the scope of PeerJ, our flagship multidisciplinary open access journal. PeerJ (previously informally known as PeerJ Life & Environment), now welcomes submissions from researchers in Chemistry, Materials Science, and select fields of Engineering, alongside established disciplines in Medicine & Health, Biology & Life Sciences, and Environmental Sciences.
Why we’re expanding PeerJ’s scope
Research increasingly addresses complex, interconnected challenges that span multiple disciplines. This journal expansion will promote cross-disciplinary innovation and create enhanced opportunities for authors. PeerJ now enables faster knowledge transfer, a more diverse reviewer and reader community, and greater impact for open research.
What’s new?
PeerJ now accepts submissions in Chemistry, Materials Science, and Engineering fields, expanding beyond its long-standing coverage in Medicine & Health, Biology & Life Sciences, and Environmental Sciences. To streamline the journey for authors, PeerJ’s five Chemistry titles and the Open Advances series have closed to new submissions. These changes make it easier to choose the right venue and benefit from unified editorial processes and a connected community. A refreshed PeerJ.com experience is also rolling out to make it simpler to discover world-class research with cleaner design, clearer research pages, and improved pathways to articles addressing today’s greatest challenges.

What’s next in 2026
PeerJ plans to further broaden its scope in 2026 to include Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and additional areas of Engineering. PeerJ Computer Science will continue as a standalone journal focused on cutting-edge computer science research.

If you are preparing a manuscript in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Engineering fields, PeerJ is open for submissions. Authors in Medicine & Health, Biology & Life Sciences, and Environmental Sciences should continue to submit to PeerJ as usual.
