PeerJ expands its scope and introduces a refreshed website experience
To foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and amplify research impact, Taylor & Francis has expanded the scope of PeerJ, our flagship multidisciplinary open access journal. PeerJ (previously informally known as PeerJ Life & Environment), now welcomes submissions from researchers in Chemistry, Materials Science, and select fields of Engineering, alongside established disciplines in Medicine & Health, Biology & Life Sciences, and Environmental Sciences.
Why we’re expanding PeerJ’s scope
Research increasingly addresses complex, interconnected challenges that span multiple disciplines. This journal expansion will promote cross-disciplinary innovation and create enhanced opportunities for authors. PeerJ now enables faster knowledge transfer, a more diverse reviewer and reader community, and greater impact for open research.
What’s new?
PeerJ now accepts submissions in Chemistry, Materials Science, and Engineering fields, expanding beyond its long-standing coverage in Medicine & Health, Biology & Life Sciences, and Environmental Sciences. To streamline the journey for authors, PeerJ’s five Chemistry titles and the Open Advances series have closed to new submissions. These changes make it easier to choose the right venue and benefit from unified editorial processes and a connected community. A refreshed PeerJ.com experience is also rolling out to make it simpler to discover world-class research with cleaner design, clearer research pages, and improved pathways to articles addressing today’s greatest challenges.
A word from Taylor & Francis
“This is an exciting evolution for PeerJ. By becoming a more comprehensive journal, PeerJ will streamline the publishing process and create new opportunities for researchers across related disciplines to benefit from its global reach and visibility,” said Todd Hummel, Vice President of STM Publishing at Taylor & Francis. “While its scope is expanding, PeerJ remains steadfast in its commitment to expert review, research integrity, and advancing open research.”

Stephen Johnson, Editor-In-Chief, PeerJ, is also excited by the changes ahead “I am looking forward to 2026 with our streamlined portfolio and expanded scope. We are all excited to be able to share the PeerJ experience with even more authors, editors and reviewers.”
A word from our Editorial Board
Antonio Crotti, Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, and Academic Editor for PeerJ, had this to say on the inclusion of organic chemistry research into our flagship journal; “PeerJ is a journal that publishes works of excellent scientific quality. This level is achieved thanks to the synergistic combination of a rigorous editorial board and an efficient, thorough, and fair peer review process. By incorporating organic chemistry, the journal becomes a highly attractive option for researchers in the field, offering reliable, high-impact open access science with affordable article processing costs.”
What remains the same
PeerJ’s core commitments are unchanged. Authors can expect rigorous, expert editorial review, robust policies that uphold research integrity, and open access publishing designed to maximize visibility, reuse, and impact.
What’s next in 2026
PeerJ plans to further broaden its scope in 2026 to include Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and additional areas of Engineering. PeerJ Computer Science will continue as a standalone journal focused on cutting-edge computer science research.
Guidance for authors
If you are preparing a manuscript in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Engineering fields, PeerJ is open for submissions. Authors in Medicine & Health, Biology & Life Sciences, and Environmental Sciences should continue to submit to PeerJ as usual. For details on aims and scope, article types, and editorial policies, please consult the author guidelines and scope pages.
