Molecular phylogenetics of swimming crabs (Portunoidea Rafinesque, 1815) supports a revised family-level classification and suggests a single derived origin of symbiotic taxa

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Mohammad Shamsur Rahman –– very much fantastic work in the field of taxonomy, both in classical and molecular approach!
In silico identification of off-target pesticidal dsRNA binding in honey bees (Apis mellifera)

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Ilaria Negri –– The article deals with a new biotechnology with broad application in agriculture but with a potential risk for non target insects
Adult zebra finches rehearse highly variable song patterns during sleep

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Lesley Rogers –– Rehearsal during sleep and memory consolidation is a big issue. This is an excellent paper.
Effects of tire leachate on the invasive mosquito Aedes albopictus and the native congener Aedes triseriatus

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Ilaria Negri –– Aedes albopictus is an invasive mosquito species, able to adapt to many environments. This article helps to shed light on its ecology.
Energetics and evasion dynamics of large predators and prey: pumas vs. hounds

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Donald Kramer –– This article presents a unique perspective on energetics and tactics involved in a type of predator-prey encounter rarely documented at all, much less in this detail. It uses modern technology to full advantage in a study of charismatic animals. Both reviewers are experts in the area and concur that this is a unique and valuable study.
Neogene amphibians and reptiles (Caudata, Anura, Gekkota, Lacertilia, and Testudines) from the south of Western Siberia, Russia, and Northeastern Kazakhstan

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Graciela Piñeiro –– This manuscript is an important contribution to the knowledge of the almost unknown Siberian Neogene herpetofauna. It deals not solely with detailed anatomical descriptions and taxonomic identification of the specimens, but provides interesting paleobiogeographic hypotheses concerning the origin and dispersion of the taxa, including newly paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental aspects spanning mostly the Oligocene to Pliocene periods. Studied environmental parameters include precipitation rates in the Miocene which are compared to current rainfall values for the region.
From eggs to bites: do ovitrap data provide reliable estimates of Aedes albopictus biting females?

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Ilaria Negri –– Researches on tiger mosquitoes monitoring are needed given the importance of this species as vector of pathogens and given that it is extremely annoying
Optimizing the use of a sensor resource for opponent polarization coding

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Mario Negrello –– This article contains an insighful and thorough analysis of the physical constraints for encoding and the processing of information in polarized vision, and more specifically, in polarization opponency. This article is exemplary for the field of neural coding in that it covers multiple angles in the analysis with solid logics and deep appreciation for the biological phenomenon under study.
Anatomical mechanism of spontaneous recovery in regions caudal to thoracic spinal cord injury lesions in rats

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Jafri Abdullah –– Thoracic spinal injury in humans are difficult to treat and any comparative neurobiology data is important to understand the regenerative process
Deciphering the preservation of fossil insects: a case study from the Crato Member, Early Cretaceous of Brazil

Editor rating: 9 / 10

Graciela Piñeiro –– This is an important contribution for a better understanding of the taphonomic processes that allow the preservation of delicate organisms, and as so, it will be interesting to a wide readership.
