Collections of coral, algae and rubble/live rock for this experiment were conducted by MJD under Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources Special Activities Permit 2015-17 to the Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology.

Samples for fluorescence spectroscopy were measured using an Horiba Aqualog scanning fluorometer following the methods of Nelson et al. (2015) and processed using a Matlab (v2007b) script (available at https://github.com/zquinlan/fDOMmatlab/script.md).
