Jorge M Ferreira performed the experiments, analyzed the data, prepared figures and/or tables, authored or reviewed drafts of the paper.

I Anna S Olsson contributed reagents/materials/analysis tools, authored or reviewed drafts of the paper.

Ana M Valentim conceived and designed the experiments, analyzed the data, contributed reagents/materials/analysis tools, prepared figures and/or tables, authored or reviewed drafts of the paper, approved the final draft.

Animal Ethics

The following information was supplied relating to ethical approvals (i.e., approving body and any reference numbers):

The Animal-Welfare Body of the institute and the National Competent Authority for animal research (Direção-Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária, Lisbon, Portugal) approved the procedures described in this work (014703/2017-06-16).

Data Deposition

The following information was supplied regarding data availability:

The raw measurements are provided in the supplementary file 1. The raw data shows the time (in sec.) that each adult zebrafish took to lose equilibrium, to lose response to painful stimulus and to cease opercula movement when submitted to the overdose of different anaesthetics or to rapid cooling.

Funding

This work was supported by Norte Portugal Regional Operational Programme (NORTE 2020), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) (project Norte-01-0145-FEDER-000008 - Porto Neurosciences and Neurologic Disease Research Initiative at I3S), and co-funded by FEDER through the Operational Competitiveness and Internationalization Program (POCI) within the scope of the Program “Portugal 2020” (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029542). Individual funding was also provided by the postdoctoral fellowship SFRH/BPD/103006/2014 issued by FCT. The funders had no role in study design, data collection and analysis, decision to publish, or preparation of the manuscript.
