Handling vertebrate animals in Greece does not require a special permit if you are a member of a University (the first author was indeed a PhD student at University of Crete at the time of the study). Despite that, we asked for and received a permit for handling birds and attaching radio-transmitters, from the Greek Ministry of Agriculture (Reference number: 89890 / 1448).
