PeerJ Author & Reviewer

Summary

Naturalist and researcher with over 30 years of experience. My research goals are to increase knowledge on biodiversity evolution and natural history, to contribute to nature conservation and sustainable development, and to promote discussions about complex social-environmental systems across space, time and social dimensions. I am passioned about the study of biodiversity, especially in tropical and rural-urban ecosystems, and the factors underlying evolution, distribution and shared biogeographic patterns of species. I have expanded my work to ONE health approaches of anthropogenic effects on biodiversity; urban ecology and wildlife gardens; history of science and historical cartography; and use of natural materials in traditional decorative arts and handicrafts. I am full-time Professor at USFQ, where I am Director of the Institute of Tropical Biodiversity iBIOTROP, Senior Curator of the Museum of Zoology, and General Director of TUERI Wildlife Hospital. In addition, I am associate researcher at Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad INABIO (Ecuador), and member of various specialist groups and Red List authorities at The IUCN Species Survival Commission.
