Balasubramanian Ganesh, M.Sc., Ph.D., serving as Scientist-D (Assistant Director) at the ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, Chennai since September 2014. Formerly, worked as Scientist-C at the ICMR-National Institute of Cholera & Enteric Diseases, Kolkata, West Bengal (February 2007-September 2014) and as Microbiologist National Centre for Disease Control, Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Calicut, Kerala (April 2003 to February 2007). He is an expert in the field of viral gastroenteritis, zoonoses and emerging viral diseases. He contributed significantly in the field of viral disease epidemiology, disease surveillance, diagnosis, microbial diversity, characterization and comprehensive phylogenetic analysis. He has authored a book and two book chapters in reputed publishers. He has published 53 scientific research articles, reviews in international peer-reviewed journals of high impact factor. Since my joining at ICMR-NIE, Chennai (Sept’ 2014 - Aug’ 2015 as Scientist-C and Sept’ 2015 - till date as Scientist-D), I am actively involved in all the research projects and activities of the Laboratory Division of ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai. Initially, I am actively involved as Co-investigators in three extramural research projects entitled (i). Hospital based Sentinel Surveillance for Bacterial Meningitis in India, (ii). National Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance (IBBS) among high-risk group population for HIV infections viz. Female Sex workers (FSW), Men having sex with men (MSM), Transgenders (TGs) and Injection Drug users (IDU) and (iii). HIV Sentinel Surveillance (HSS) among Antenatal clinic attendees and High-risk group populations (viz. FSW, MSM, IDU, TG, Long distance truckers (LDT) and Single Male migrants (SMM) among 7 Indian states as Regional Institute (RI) in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha. Also, I am involved as Principal Investigator in two intramural research studies. I am actively involved in Leptospirosis Reference Unit (LRU) which involve in the Leptospires culture repository and maintenance work activities. At present, a total of 40 different leptospiral strains (12 for Microscopic agglutination test [MAT] panel and 28 other leptospiral strains were being maintained at ICMR-NIE, Chennai for our intramural research project.
