Summary

Dr. Yow Yoon Yen earned her PhD in Algae Biotechnology from the University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2014. She currently serves as Senior Lecturer at the Sunway University with extensive experience in the field of marine biotechnology. Her research focuses on the discovery and development of new compounds from algae as functional food and nutraceutical candidates in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, her work focuses on the beneficial effects of algae in cosmeceuticals. She is also interested in the study of molecular phylogenetics and genetic diversity of algae and invasive species.
She served as Secretary of the Asia-Pacific Phycological Forum 2017. She is also a member of the British Phycological Society, Asia-Pacific Society for Applied Phycology, Asian Pacific Phycological Association, Malaysian Society of Marine Sciences (MSMS), Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Chemistry Research and Application and reviewer of high impact journals.
Dr Yow has received various awards for her academic and research excellence. She was awarded the Teaching Quality Recognition of excellent teaching performance three times (2015-2018), and the Excellent in Early CAREER Academic Recognition (2016) from Sunway University. In 2018, she was awarded Outstanding Woman in Science (Major Area of Study - Biotechnology), and the GlobalSeaweedSTAR Travel Fund from the UK Research and Innovation – Global Challenge Research Fund.
