Yegor S Vassetzky

PeerJ Editor, Author & Reviewer

Summary

Yegor Vassetzky graduated from the Moscow State University. After a PhD thesis in molecular biology at the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology in Moscow, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in laboratories of Klaus Scherrer (Paris), Susan Gasser (Lausanne) and Marcel Méchali (Montpellier). Since 2002 he heads the laboratory of Nuclear Organization and Pathologies at Gustave Roussy Institute (Villejuif, France). His main research interests concern epigenetic regulation in cancer and neuromuscular diseases. Yegor Vassetzky is Associate Editor for Biopolymers & Cell, and member of the Editorial Board of PeerJ and Oncotarget.

Head of the "Nuclear Organization and Pathologies" laboratory at UMR8126 (CNRS - Institut Gustave Roussy - Université Paris Sud). Gene expression depends on chromatin conformation. The chromosome regions which are active in transcription are determined by changes affecting the DNA and the chromatin proteins. These epigenetic changes, which do not alter the coding sequence, are reversible. Recent studies have shown that they play an important role in genetic disease and cancer. Gene expression is also regulated by organisation of the chromatin at a higher level. Several levels of organisation exist in the cell nucleus: at the nucleosomes, the chromatin fibres and loops or the domains. The chromosomes themselves occupy well demarcated territories within the nucleus. The team is interested in abnormalities of organisation of chromatin, most especially in two diseases: mantle cell lymphoma and facio-scapulo-humeral muscular dystrophy.
