With this PhD thesis we want to solve some of the most pressing challenges related to water resources research and management: hydrological system complexity, non-stationarity of boundary conditions, high-frequency monitoring of environmental processes, global change impact assessment. More specifically, we want to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of diatom communities (both terrestrial and aquatic diatoms), by relating them to physio-geographical characteristics (e.g. geology, land cover, soil type, soil moisture, nutrient content, pH, etc.…) and hydrological dynamics.
