Summary

María Fernanda Sánchez-Soto Jiménez has a M.Sc.in marine biology from CINVESTAV-Mérida, Mexico. In her thesis work she pioneered the description of bacterial community structure of surficial sediments along a depth gradient from shallow to deep environments, in the Mexican region of northwestern GoM. She focused on areas with oil reservoirs that will be subjected to forthcoming oil exploration and extraction in deep waters.
She is currently a PhD student at CINVESTAV-Mérida, researching on bacterial community structure of marine sediments in the GoM, looking for functional genes and diversity of sulphate reducing bacteria inhabiting Deep-sea environments, capable to use the hydrocarbons from oil as carbon source. She is interested on microbial ecology and the biotechnological use of microorganisms to mitigate oil and other pollutants.
