Summary

Onn Haji Hashim received his PhD from the University of Glasgow in December 1987. He joined the academic staff of the University of Malaya in January 1988, and is currently a Professor at the Department of Molecular Medicine. Onn had spent short sabbaticals at the University of Osaka Medical School Japan in 1991, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham USA in 1994, under sponsorships of the JSPS Fellowship and the American Fulbright Award, respectively. He is recipient of the National Academic Award 2007 in the category of Publication of Journal Article. Onn was appointed Visiting Professor at Prince of Songkla University, Thailand in 2016 and 2017, and as a Subject Matter Expert (proteomics) for Steinbeis Malaysia Foundation in 2017. He has supervised 12 PhD and 12 Master’s students to successful completion, and sits on a number of advisory and evaluation committees at university, national and international levels. His current research interest is in proteomics, particularly in the use of lectin-based techniques in search of novel peptide biomarkers in serum, urine and saliva samples from patients with various different cancers. He is former Editor-in-Chief of the Malaysian Journal of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and is presently member of the editorial board of Biomarker Research. He is currently Head of the University of Malaya Centre for Proteomics Research.
