Summary

I am from Brazil, where I obtained a degree in Oceanography from the Univ. do Rio Grande. I then finished a Masters and a PhD in Oceanography at Oregon State Univ under the co-supervision of Ev and Barry Sherr and Steve Giovannoni working on the effects of protist bacterivory on bacterioplankton community structure. Next I worked at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Inst. supervised by Ed DeLong on topics including the analysis of bacterioplankton (BP) diversity, the development of real-time PCR for genes and mRNAs, and BP metagenomics, and the biology of photoheterotrophs in the Ocean. I was hired as an Assistant Professor at the Chesapeake Biological Lab where I led research on the diversity, phylogeny and activity of BP, measurements of PB gene expression in situ biology and microbial processes leading to methylmercury production by bacteria.

Since May 2009, I am a Professor At the Observatoire Océanologique de Banyuls and the head of the Microbial Biodiversity and Biotechnology Unit and the Scientific advisor of the Bio2Mar platform of the OOB. I lead research on the biology of photoheterotrophs in the Ocean, and the ecology and genomics of, and the exploitation of, marine microorganisms for biotechnological purposes. My main interests are the connection betweem specific bacterioplankton activity and marine biogeochemical cycles, microbial biotechnology, the biology of photoheterotrophy, and chemical interactions of microbes in symbiosis.

The Laboratory of Microbial Biodiversity and Biotechnology (USR3579 - LBBM), is a joint UPMC and CNRS (InEE) research and service unit founded in 2014 and dedicated to research and development focusing on microorganisms and their interactions with other organisms (micro- as well as macro-organisms), as well as, with their surrounding environment. The unit is partly located in Building B of the Observatoire Océanologique in Banyuls (OOB) and partly at Building S of the UPVD campus. In Banyuls, the unit will soon occupy newly constructed research spaces in Building C, which is expected to be delivered in the Fall of 2017. One particularity of the LBBM is a near 20-year-long partnership with the Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical company Laboratoires Pierre Fabre. Starting with a service contract, it evolved to a Joint Research team with now 4 full-time company staff working in Banyuls-sur-Mer, and a significant contribution of faculty, researchers and technical personnel. In terms of instruments, at the Banyuls site, the LBBM is a major user and contributor to the Observatory’s Technical platforms, and thus does not directly manage the instrumentation. Those platforms are 1) The BioPIC platform founded in 2008 that assembles instruments dedicated to microscopy and cytometry, including a TEM, confocal, epifluorescence and inverted microscopes, and flow cytometers. The Bio2mar platform, was founded in 2010 and was co-financed by the Region Languedoc Roussillon, Pierre Fabre, the Universities (UPMC and UPVD), the CNRS and a number of European, federal and local governments. Bio2Mar gathers instrumentation dedicated to research and development in marine biology and biotechnology with a particular strength in microbial biotechnology.
