Summary
I Graduated in Biology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). I obtained my Ph—D. from the University of Pennsylvania. I'm currently the director of the Irapuato Unit of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) since 2013. I'm a researcher in the Department of Genetic Engineering in the same Unit, which I headed from 2007 to 2013.
I'm head of the Laboratory for Molecular Biology and Microbial Ecology. My group's interest is the study of microbial communities and the ecology and evolution of the Bacillus, for which we combine classical microbial approaches and genomics. Our principal place of study is Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, Mexico. We benefit from the interaction with different collaborators in the study of synthetic communities and a mathematical approach through network analysis to understand complex microbial communities.
I have a great interest in education and outreach. My group organizes and participates in multiple Science Workshops for children, high school and undergraduate students in Mexico, among which are: The "Ciencia Viva Workshops" (http://www.micienciaviva.com/), since 2006, that we do during the summer. We also collaborate in the "Science for Youth" Workshops organized by Dr. Bor of CIMAT. I also collaborate with estornuda.me (https://www.estornuda.me/), for the dissemination of information on science in Spanish, particularly for COVID-19.
