Julia Massimelli Sewall
Summary
Dr. Massimelli Sewall obtained her BS in Microbiology in 2002 and her PhD in Biology in 2008 both at Universidad Nacional de Rio Cuarto, Argentina, with research focused in bacterial gene regulation. After her PhD, she pursued postdoctoral training in the area of posttranscriptional gene regulation, RNA Biology and Cancer virology at the National Cancer Institute (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland, USA. She later became interested in education and joined the Keck Science Department of the Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology. She later joined the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of California, Irvine as tenure track lecturer with an emphasis on curriculum development and educational research. At UC Irvine she was in charged of the microbiology course coodination, laboratory courses revamp and she acted as co-Director of UCI Master in Biotechology. In 2019 she joined Maastricht University as Associate Professor and Director of Master studies.
Dr. Massimelli Sewall's expertise is in Microbiology and curriculum/educational initiatives. As an academic and scientist heavily invested in data-driven interventions and assessment, Dr. Massimelli Sewall has made numerous presentations at STEM education meetings, and has published manuscripts that discuss and validate active learning, educational and outreach tools. She is certified in active learning, teaching design and educational research.
