Kazuhiko Kibayashi

The purpose of forensic medicine is to contribute to developing strategies to protect the safety of the individual and society by providing scientific and impartial judgment in legal cases in the field of medicine. As the head of the Department of Forensic Medicine at the University School of Medicine, I am responsible for three areas of forensic medicine: forensic pathology, forensic toxicology, and forensic genetics. Since death from traumatic injuries is a major subject of forensic medicine, I am particularly specialized in traumatic brain injury due to head trauma, and in addition to analyzing human autopsy cases, I conduct basic research on traumatic brain injury using experimental animal models. Our policy is to identify basic research issues in daily forensic practice to prevent traumatic brain injury from becoming serious and to verify them using experimental animals. By analyzing both autopsy cases of human trauma patients and animal models of traumatic brain injury and adding up the results of both studies, we are analyzing the pathogenesis of traumatic brain injury and devising methods to prevent severe injury. Our goal is to contribute to saving the lives of trauma patients and reducing the sequelae of traumatic brain injury through forensic research. On the other hand, the development of forensic toxicology and forensic genetics is also an important issue that will contribute to people and society. Identifying the causative substance in acutely intoxicated patients and saving the patient's life is an essential mission of Forensic Toxicology. Personal identification through human DNA polymorphism analysis is also an important field for solving incidents and maintaining public safety. I hope to contribute to people's peace of mind and the safety and security of society through my academic activities.
