Summary

Microbial and Ecosystem Ecology—Much of my research links temporal fluctuations in resources and disturbance, especially in extreme environments, to bacterial community structure and ecosystem services. This overarching theme has inspired questions relating to the: 1) consequences of rainfall and snowfall change on bacterial community assembly and trace gas production; 2) impact of nutrients and moisture variability on bacterial abundance and soil respiration in Antarctica dry valleys; 3) effects of wildfires on biological crust regeneration and soil stability in the Great Basin Desert; and 4) role of bacterial dormancy in structuring hypersaline lake communities across the western US.
