Education: Melbourne (PhD, DSc); Harvard (Knox Fellow, Agassiz Lecturer). Founding Chair, Ecology & Evolution Section, UCSD. Fellow of AAAS and the Linnean Society of London, he serves on several editorial boards and was a Trustee of the San Diego Zoo. His research has focused on the evolution and conservation of animal species using noninvasive genotyping; more recently, he has been assessing effects of hydropower dams and sea level rise on people and wildlife in Southeast Asia.
