Summary
I've a PhD at Universidade de Vigo (UVigo) (Spain), in the soil science area. My PhD thesis (2013-16) supervised by Dra. Maria Luisa Andrade Couce and Dra. Maria Flora Alonso Vega was focused on the behaviour of heavy metals pollution in soils (especially lead) and application of remediation strategies in those soils. During my PhD, I had a fellowship from the UVigo, and I performed pre- and postdoc stays in the Universidade do Porto (UP) (Portugal) (5 months, 2015-2016 and 2 months 2016-2017, respectively) to learn several ecotoxicological techniques. During the first stay, I also began to work with the impact of microplastics (MPs) on agricultural soils, focusing on earthworms' impact, key organisms for soil biodiversity, and agricultural sustainability. Later, I joined the UP as an integrated researcher at GreenUPorto (Nov.17-Feb19), and in March 2019, I moved to CIIMAR as FCT Junior independent researcher. In May 2022, I moved to UVigo as “Juan de la Cierva-Incorporacion” fellow.
I participated in 13 R&D projects and competitive projects for research centres (1 as principal researcher (PI)), published 29 articles, 8 book chapters, co-editor of 2 book of abstracts and 41 works submitted to conferences and workshops. I've teaching experience in the UVigo and UP with four subjects, and I also co-supervised 2 MSc students (UVigo) and 3 BSc students (UP). As a result, I have a positive evaluation as "Profesor Ayudante Doctor", “Profesor de Universidad Privada” and “Profesor Contratado Doctor” by ANECA. Besides, I've been a scientific expert at "Contamination by plastics" panel held at Congreso de Los Diputados through Ciencia en el Parlamento initiative (2018). Also related to this topic, I'm project reviewer for the Czech Science Foundation, Central Finance and Contracting Agency (Latvia Gov), European Science Foundation and I'm part of the EU-H2020 evaluation panel for contamination by plastics in agricultural systems. Moreover, I was editor of a special issue about MPs contamination for Sustainability, academic editor at PloS One and editorial board member of 4 WoS journals. Also, I'm a reviewer for more than 45 WoS journals.
My national and international collaboration covers several contacts with research groups in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Iran, India, Chile, Australia… Nine articles were published within this collaboration, and three projects were achieved in the last five years (Nameless, Matisse and COST Action CA20101).
Currently, I am working on three research lines. First, I'm using Fe-NMs as metal scavengers and improving the crop tolerance to agricultural soils polluted by industrial activities (Nameless). Besides, I have other research line focused on the soil ecotoxicology to assess metal availability to soil biota (mainly plants and earthworms). Finally, since two years ago, I'm focused on the assessment of the impact of conventional/biodegradable MPs on agricultural soils, with a holistic approach, from the effect of MPs on soil properties to the ecotoxicological effects on soil biota, such as earthworms and microbial activities (Matisse project, CEECIND2017 contract and COST Action CA20101).
To conclude, since my doctoral thesis, I have demonstrated my independence as a researcher and my ability to adapt to new environments, obtaining funding in competitive calls, leading research projects (2) and publishing 6 papers without my thesis advisors. Furthermore, I have also demonstrated my capacity to adapt to new research lines, such as MPs or use NMs as nanofertilizers.
