Robert A Cannings
Summary
Curator of Entomology at the Royal BC Museum (Victoria, BC) from 1980 until retirement in 2013; now Curator Emeritus. 1987 -- 1996 led the museum’s Natural History Section. Active in the Scientific Committee of the Biological Survey of Canada, the BC Invertebrate Recovery Team and the Entomological Societies of British Columbia and Canada. Member of the Arthropod Subcommittee of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. Biologist and nature interpreter for BC Parks and the Canadian Wildlife Service; lecturer in the Zoology Department and curator of the Spencer Entomological Museum at the University of BC. BSc and MSc from the University of BC; PhD from the University of Guelph.
Rob studies insect systematics, especially of Odonata and Asilidae (Diptera). Author of several books, including “The Dragonflies of British Columbia” (1977), “Introducing the Dragonflies of British Columbia and the Yukon” (2002) and “The Systematics of Lasiopogon (Diptera: Asilidae)” (2002). Co-author of “The Birds of the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia” (1987) and “The World of Fresh Water” (1998).
Honorary Fellow of Okanagan College (2008) for work in biology, public education and nature conservation. Bruce Naylor Award (Alliance of Natural History Museums of Canada, 2009) for contributions to museum-based natural history studies in Canada. Lifetime Achievement Award from the RBC; Honorary Member of the Entomological Society of BC.
