Summary
As a behavioral biologist by academic training, my research work is centered on three disciplines: behavioral ecology, neuroethology and bioacoustics. I am primarily interested in animal communication, with a focus on avian and nonhuman primate vocalizations. My most recent research project got me involved using tools of soundscape ecology. Some techniques I have used over the years relate to psychology (operant conditioning), neuroanatomy (tract tracing), neurobiology (brain metabolic mapping), electrophysiology (both acute and chronic neuronal recordings), and biotelemetry (radio tracking of vocal signals). I have published on topics ranging from development in brain and behaviour and cerebral asymmetry to birdsong learning and primate vocal duets. The R programming platform is my toolbox of choice for data analysis. My scientific thinking has been influenced by four eminent scientists for whom I have a profound admiration: my undergrad advisor Professor Jean-Charles Guyomarc'h (University of Rennes I, France), my PhD mentor Professor Emeritus Lesley Rogers (University of New England, Australia), and my two post-doc advisors Professor Emeritus Peter J.B. Slater (St-Andrews University, UK), and Professor Daniel Margoliash (The University of Chicago, USA).
