Did the authors look at differences in body size or sex of the different turtle species? Painted turtles in particular are easy to sex. It would be interesting to see if there were spatial differences within species having to do with sex or size. Ontogeny makes a lot of sense for turtles as turtle species tend to become less carnivorous as they age.
