Preprint publication as an assignment?

As a follow up of a previous question (https://t.co/YJUbyXZ4sm) I am wondering how feasible it would be to make publication of a preprint at PeerJ an assignment for undergrads. Specifically, what might be the negative impacts for students and the community?

I think this sounds like a great assignment. It would go beyond the usual 'submit a manuscript in a style suitable for submission' and go one important step further, giving them first hand experience of submitting a preprint. As for negative impacts, I suppose if this kind of thing becomes commonplace there is the risk of flooding the preprint server with some half hearted attempts just to pass the assignment. That seems like a small price to pay for getting your students up to the level of submitting a preprint to a journal.

To avoid the flooding, I guess we could have an intermediate stage were drafts are submitted to an internal site for validation (by peers) before going to the preprint server only if certain criteria are met. However, we had good results with assignment to be done on wikipedia (http://antoinetaly.wordpress.com/2013/06/29/wikipedia-exercise/) by putting respect of the community explicitly in the evaluation.
