Why do you think non-regenerative farms had 10x more insect pests in their corn, yet yielded 29% more than regenerative farms?

Does it matter that there were 10x more pests if those farms yielded much more than farms with less pests?

The regenerative farmers replaced insecticide use with plant diversity. Cover cropping, interseeding, diversifying field margins, etc were all commonplace on the regenerative operations and seldom present on the conventional farms. We have found in previous work that insect pests are infrequent when insect diversity in crop fields is high (see Sci Adv 1:e1500558). Regenerative farmers achieve this diversification through agronomically feasible approaches.
