This is an interesting study, but I feel that the conclusion: "Given that skilled athletes showed larger amplitudes in early ERP components than novices, it appears they could detect and make perceptual decisions about the stimulus earlier than novice athletes, an early attention skill that must increase efficiency during combat sports." is not warranted. The authors found no effect whatsoever on reaction time or CPT accuracy. Without a group difference in behavior, or a relationship between the behavior and the ERP data, this conclusion is reverse inference and highly speculative. Many possible factors could effect the ERP differences unrelated to 'making perceptual decisions earlier'. The study warrants future research but is otherwise inconclusive. The authors do address this in the above paragraph, but its a shame its missing from the conclusion.
