Have you seen Kuffner et al. (2013) Calcification rates of the massive coral Siderastrea siderea and crustose coralline algae along the Florida Keys (USA) outer-reef tract. Coral Reefs 32:987-997?

Dear C. Ross and others,

Congratulations on a nice contribution to this field of study! I'd like to bring your attention to a similar study conducted in the Florida Keys (25 deg. latitude N). Over a two year period with two different sets (n = 79 total) of corals, we found clear seasonality in calcification of a massive species. Calcification rates were about 50% faster in summer compared to winter. Please see: Kuffner IB, Hickey TD, Morrison JM (2013) Calcification rates of the massive coral Siderastrea siderea and crustose coralline algae along the Florida Keys (USA) outer-reef tract. Coral Reefs 32:987-997. So it looks like, as with many other traits, seasonality in calcification may be species specific. Thank you! It is exciting to see more in-situ data on calcification rates being added to the literature.
