Are there other researchers on this topic? Seems like this is a critical set of things we should test but given the citations here, it unfortunately appears only you and your collaborators are exploring this topic. Is there related research for us to consider to make an even more compelling set of arguments?

Sorry to give that impression! There are lots of researchers in this area, more every year. For example, all of these groups cited in the introduction have studied the data citation benefit: (Gleditsch, Metelits & Strand, 2003; Ioannidis et al., 2009; Pienta, Alter & Lyle, 2010; Henneken & Accomazzi, 2011; Sears, 2011; Dorch, 2012).

Most research to date has been focused on patterns of data sharing and availability, but there is a growing literature on data reuse as well. See Zimmerman, 2003; Wan & Pavlidis, 2007; Wynholds et al., 2012; Rolland & Lee, 2013 and the following recent paper:

Rung and Brazma, Reuse of public genome-wide gene expression data, Nature Reviews Genetics 14, 89-99 (February 2013) | doi:10.1038/nrg3394
