Summary

I obtained undergraduate and masters degrees in Biology from the National University of Mexico (UNAM). My PhD in Plant Ecology was obtained from the University of Wales (Bangor). The inspirational teaching and supervision of Jose Sarukhán and John Harper were fundamental in my career development. I use information on plant form and function, demography and systematics to investigate essential processes with relevance in ecological and evolutionary theory, as well as in conservation biology. My publications therefore cover a wide range of issues from problems of scaling in plant populations, to the demographic classification of life histories, the measurement of senescence in natural populations, and the balance between species competition and coexistence.
