Client consent was not sought following discussion with the clinic manager and animal health technicians involved in data collection. This decision was based on the study design and potential outcomes: 1. there was no randomisation to treatment, 2. the proposed changes in patient care were not a radical departure from standard practice, 3. the interventions to improve care were not expected to increase risk of harm to the patient, 4. no identifying patient data were collected and 5. critical resources were not diverted from other patients during the study period.
