Research concentrated on Taxonomy and micromorphology of Peninsular Malaysian and Bornean Malvaceae subfamilies Brownlowioideae, Grewioideae and Dombeyoideae (Tiliaceae s.str.), Proteaceae, Cornaceae, Oxalidaceae, Erythroxylaceae, and Cunoniaceae. Published more than 130 papers in both the local and international refereed journals, excluding numerous abstracts of oral presentations and posters, reports and editorials. Editor of Nepenthes of Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia, Plants of Krau, and fifth revision of a Working Plan for the Matang Mangroves Forest Reserve, Perak; Co-editor of Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak (2001-present), Flora of Peninsular Malaysia (2005-present) and National Parks of Sarawak; Reviewer for Journal of Tropical Forest Science, Malaysian Journal of Science, Sains Malaysiana, Novon, Adansonia, Nordic Journal of Botany, Edinburgh Journal of Botany, TELOPEA and Phytotaxa; Member of Danum Valley Management Committee & Maliau Basin Management Committee (2002-present). Fellow of Linnean Society of London; members of International Association for Plant Taxonomy, American Society of Plant Taxonomists, and Malaysian Nature Society; Life member of Malaysian Electron Microscopy Society.
