Climate change and sustainable development – free Food, Water and Energy Nexus publishing at PeerJ!

In 2022 we are celebrating a decade of PeerJ. Launched in June 2012, PeerJ is now 10 years old! We are launching a number of celebratory promotions – or birthday presents! – this year to share our thanks and appreciation to our users who have made the last decade possible.

Our latest celebration is free publishing, for the first 10 days of September, of research on climate change and sustainable development that focuses on elements of the food, water and energy nexus.

Food, water and energy are central to sustainable development. Pressure on all three elements is increasing, driven by a rising global population, rapid urbanization, changing diets, and economic growth, whilst their availability and production are changing as a result of climate change.

The intimate linkages that make up the Food, Water and Energy Nexus require an integrated approach to ensuring water and food security, and sustainable agriculture and energy production worldwide.

For our next 10th anniversary celebration, we want to shine a light on one of the world’s most pressing issues, and so we are granting 100% APC waivers for any submissions made to PeerJ in the first 10 days of September on climate change and sustainable development that focus on elements of the food, water and energy nexus. Remember to select “Food, Water and Energy Nexus” as a subject term when submitting!

We particularly hope to see submissions on:

  • Dealing with the rising demand for water, including water resource management, ecosystem protection, water supplies and sanitation.
  • Development of alternative energies, with a focus on less water-intensive renewable energies.
  • Agricultural efficiency, so that we can produce food, and energy crops, in a less resource-intensive way.
  • Ensuring food and nutritional security, including advances in genetics and technologies that allow the sustainable intensification of crops, livestock and fish production to help meet demand as efficiently as possible.

PeerJ firmly believes that making research Open Access is the right and necessary approach to solving these important global challenges, and we hope this offer appeals to researchers who were intending to submit to a paywalled journal and allows them to publish OA.

We want as many researchers as possible to benefit from this offer, so please share this announcement with your network:

The waiver is only for the APC; other charges may still apply (e.g. for articles longer than 40 typeset pages); author services (copy-editing, video and graphical abstracts) are not included. Submissions that are started but not fully submitted, and manuscripts submitted outside of this period, are not eligible. Articles submitted before the promotion period cannot be withdrawn and then resubmitted to receive the waiver. To receive the APC waiver you must select Food, Water and Energy Nexus as a subject when submitting. If you have any questions please contact the PeerJ Communities Team.
