Summary
My broad scientific interest is vocal communication in mammals, being fascinated by the versatile acoustic signals, the evolved mechanisms and underlying cognitive abilities of different species. My research aims at understanding the selective forces that shaped specific signals, skills and communication systems.
My main model species so far were African and Asian elephants. These highly social mammals combine the ability of vocal learning with complex cognitive skills and I significantly contributed to the field by studying imitative capacities and the adaptive function of vocal learning within the elephants’ natural communication system.
