Background
Accurate differentiation between stereopsis assessments in the natural and dichoptic presentation states has proven challenging with commercial stereopsis measurement tools. This study proposes a novel method to delineate these differences more precisely.
Methods
We instituted two stereopsis test systems predicated on a pair of 4K smartphones and a modified Frisby Near Stereotest (FNS) version. Stereoacuity was evaluated both in the natural environment state (via the modified FNS) and the dichoptic state (via smartphones). Thirty subjects aged 20 to 28 years participated in the study with the best-corrected visual acuity (VA) of each eye no less than 0 logMAR and stereoauity of no worse than 40″. Varying degrees of monocular VA loss were induced using the fogging method, while this study does not explore conditions where the VA of both eyes is worse than 0 logMAR.
Results
When the VA difference between the two eyes did not exceed 0.2 logMAR, the modified FNS produced lower stereoacuity values compared to the 4K smartphones (Wilcoxon signed-rank test: difference = 0 logMAR, Z = −3.879, P < 0.001; difference = 0.1 logMAR, Z = −3.478, P = 0.001; difference = 0.2 logMAR, Z = −3.977, P < 0.001). Conversely, no significant differences were observed when the binocular vision difference exceeded 0.2 logMAR (difference = 0.3 logMAR, Z = −1.880, P = 0.060; difference = 0.4 logMAR, Z = −1.784, P = 0.074; difference = 0.5 logMAR, Z = −1.812, P = 0.070).
Conclusion
The findings suggest that stereoacuity values measurements taken in the natural environment state surpass those derived from the dichoptic presentation. However, the observed difference diminishes as stereopsis decreases, corresponding to an increase in induced anisometropia.

Background
Thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) is a disease associated with autoimmune thyroid disorders and it can lead to proptosis, diplopia, and vision-threatening compressive optic neuropathy. To comprehensively understand the molecular mechanisms underlying orbital adipogenesis in TAO, we characterize the intrinsic molecular properties of orbital adipose/connective tissue from patients with TAO and control individuals.
Methods
RNA sequencing analysis (RNA-seq) was performed to measure the gene expression of orbital adipose/connective tissues of TAO patients. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected and analyzed through Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). The protein–protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed using the STRING database, and hub genes were identified by the Cytoscape plug-in, cytoHubba. We validated several top DEGs through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT–PCR).
Results
We identified 183 DEGs in adipose tissue between TAO patients (n = 3) and control patients (n = 3) through RNA sequencing, including 114 upregulated genes and 69 downregulated genes. The PPI network of these DEGs had 202 nodes and 743 edges. PCR-based validation results of orbital adipose tissue showed multiple top-ranked genes in TAO patients (n = 4) are immune and inflammatory response genes compared with the control individual (n = 4). They include ceruloplasmin isoform x3 (CP), alkaline tissue-nonspecific isozyme isoform x1 (ALPL), and angiotensinogen (AGT), which were overrepresented by 2.27- to 6.40-fold. Meanwhile, protein mab-21-like 1 (MAB21L1), phosphoinositide 3-kinase gamma-subunit (PIK3C2G), and clavesin-2 (CLVS2) decreased by 2.6% to 32.8%. R-spondin 1 (RSPO1), which is related to oogonia differentiation and developmental angiogenesis, was significantly downregulated in the orbital muscle tissues of patients with TAO compared with the control groups (P = 0.024).
Conclusions
Our results suggest that there are genetic differences in orbital adipose-connective tissues derived from TAO patients. The upregulation of the inflammatory response in orbital fat of TAO may be consistent with the clinical phenotype like eyelid edema, exophthalmos, and excess tearing. Downregulation of MAB21L1, PIK3C2G, and CLVS2 in TAO tissue demonstrates dysregulation of differentiation, oxidative stress, and developmental pathways.

Background
Visual attention is very important in basketball shooting, which is a prerequisite for forming good muscle proprioception and improving the shooting rate. The ability of visual instant searching information in the process of free throw plays an important role in the mobilization of free throw percentage. The aim of this study is to explore the fixation characteristics of athletes at different levels in the process of free throw shooting and to provide scientific basis for improving the free throw training of basketball players.
Methods
A total of 20 expert basketball players, 20 general basketball players and 20 novice basketball players participated in the experiment. Participants in the three groups wore eye tracker to make free throws, and analyzed the difference of visual attention among the three groups.
Results
The expert group had fewer number of fixations on the front, bottom, top-right, and top-right areas of the basket than the general and novice groups. The expert group also had smaller saccadic amplitudes than the other two groups. In terms of fixation duration, the expert group had longer fixation duration on the front and top areas of the basket than the other two groups, while in the top-right and bottom-right areas, the expert group had shorter fixation durations. The pupil dilation of the expert group was larger than that of the other two groups.
Conclusion
During the free throw process, the expert group had a clear attentional focus, concentrated fixation points, efficient information search, and precise processing. Profound basketball knowledge, proficient skills, and accumulated experience are the foundation of visual efficient search and precise processing during free throw attempts, and they are also the prerequisite for ensuring a high free throw shooting percentage.

During social interactions, the ability to detect and respond to gaze-based joint attention bids often involves the evaluation of non-communicative eye movements. However, very little is known about how much humans are able to track and parse spatial information from these non-communicative eye movements over time, and the extent to which this influences joint attention outcomes. This was investigated in the current study using an interactive computer-based joint attention game. Using a fully within-subjects design, we specifically examined whether participants were quicker to respond to communicative joint attention bids that followed predictive, as opposed to random or no, non-communicative gaze behaviour. Our results suggest that in complex, dynamic tasks, people adaptively use and dismiss non-communicative gaze information depending on whether it informs the locus of an upcoming joint attention bid. We also went further to examine the extent to which this ability to track dynamic spatial information was specific to processing gaze information. This was achieved by comparing performance to a closely matched non-social task where eye gaze cues were replaced with dynamic arrow stimuli. Whilst we found that people are also able to track and use dynamic non-social information from arrows, there was clear evidence for a relative advantage for tracking gaze cues during social interactions. The implications of these findings for social neuroscience and autism research are discussed.

Background
Demodex blepharitis is a common chronic disease. The number of mites is associated with ocular discomfort. The accurate number derived from well-stained specimens is, hence, in favor of diagnosing, monitoring, and determining treatment responses.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted between April and July 2022 at the dermatology and ophthalmology clinic, Walailak University, Thailand. Adult participants with clinical suspicion of Demodex blepharitis were recruited. We examined eyelashes under light microscopy to quantify the number of Demodex mites before and after adding CSB gel. The mite counts, evaluated by an untrained investigator and an experienced investigator, were recorded and compared.
Results
A total of 30 participants were included for final analysis, among which 25 (83.3%) were female. The median age was 64.0 years (IQR, 61.0–68.0). The median Demodex counts evaluated by the experienced investigator before and after adding CSB gel were 1.0 (IQR, 0.0–1.0) and 2.5 (IQR, 2.0–3.0), respectively (p < 0.001). Moreover, the median Demodex counts evaluated by the untrained investigator before and after adding CSB gel were 1.0 (IQR, 0.0–1.0) and 2.0 (IQR, 1.0–3.0), respectively (p < 0.001). The correlation coefficient between Demodex counts after the addition of CSB counted by the experienced investigator and those counted by the untrained investigator was 0.92 (p < 0.001). CSB gel is a promising product to identify and quantify the number of Demodex mites. The findings supported the consideration of CSB gel as one of the diagnostic stains.

Purpose
Bright light conditions are supposed to curb eye growth in animals with experimental myopia. Here we investigated the effects of temporal bright light at very low frequencies exposures on lens-induced myopia (LIM) progression.
Methods
Myopia was induced by application of −6.00 D lenses over the right eye of guinea pigs. They were randomly divided into four groups based on exposure to different lighting conditions: constant low illumination (CLI; 300 lux), constant high illumination (CHI; 8,000 lux), very low frequency light (vLFL; 300/8,000 lux, 10 min/c), and low frequency light (LFL; 300/8,000 lux, 20 s/c). Refraction and ocular dimensions were measured per week. Changes in ocular dimensions and refractions were analyzed by paired t-tests, and differences among the groups were analyzed by one-way ANOVA.
Results
Significant myopic shifts in refractive error were induced in lens-treated eyes compared with contralateral eyes in all groups after 3 weeks (all P < 0.05). Both CHI and LFL conditions exhibited a significantly less refractive shift of LIM eyes than CLI and vLFL conditions (P < 0.05). However, only LFL conditions showed significantly less overall myopic shift and axial elongation than CLI and vLFL conditions (both P < 0.05). The decrease in refractive error of both eyes correlated significantly with axial elongation in all groups (P < 0.001), except contralateral eyes in the CHI group (P = 0.231). LFL condition significantly slacked lens thickening in the contralateral eyes.
Conclusions
Temporal bright light at low temporal frequency (0.05 Hz) appears to effectively inhibit LIM progression. Further research is needed to determine the safety and the potential mechanism of temporal bright light in myopic progression.

Background
Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, remote work and education and digital display use have become more prevalent. However, compared with printed material, digital displays cause more eye fatigue and may decrease task performance. For instance, the reflections on the monitor can cause discomfort or distraction, particularly when glare monitors are used with black backgrounds.
Methods
This study simultaneously uses electroencephalography (EEG) and an eye-tracker to measure the possible negative effects of using a glare monitor on the illegibility of sentences.
Results
The experiment results showed no difference in reading time and subjective illegibility rating between glare and non-glare monitors. However, with glare monitors, eye fixation when reading lasted longer. Further, EEG beta (15–20 Hz) power variations suggested that the participants were less engaged in the reading task when a glare monitor was used with a black background.
Conclusions
These results indicate that the negative effects of using a glare monitor are subtle but certainly present. They also show that physiological measures such as EEG and eye tracking can assess the subtle effects in an objective manner, even if behavioral measures such as subjective illegibility ratings or reading time may not show the differences.

Background
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a severe preventable complication among ophthalmic surgical patients. The knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of nurses play a key role in effective VTE prevention. However, little is known about the KAP of ophthalmic nurses’ VTE prevention. This study aimed to examine the level of KAP toward VTE prevention among Chinese ophthalmic nurses and to investigate the influencing factors of their VTE practice.
Methods
A total of 610 ophthalmic nurses from 17 cities in Hunan and Zhejiang Provinces, China, participated in this study. Data was collected via the Sojump online platform from March to April 2021. A self-administered VTE questionnaire was developed to assess nurses’ KAP toward VTE prevention. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of ophthalmic nurses’ VTE prevention practice.
Results
The scores (correct rates) of ophthalmic nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice were 103.87 ± 20.50 (76.4%), 21.96 ± 2.72, and 48.96 ± 11.23 (81.6%), respectively. The three lowest-scored knowledge items were related to VTE complications, physical prevention, and risk assessment. The three lowest-scored attitude items were related to nurses’ training, VTE risk, and patient education. The three lowest-scored practice items were related to the assessment scale, VTE assessment, and patient education. Nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice were significantly correlated with each other. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that Hunan Province (B = 2.77, p = 0.006), general hospital (B = 2.97, p = 0.009), outpatient department (B = 3.93, p = 0.021), inpatient department (B = 2.50, p = 0.001), previous VTE prevention training (B = 3.46, p < 0.001), VTE prevention management in hospital (B = 4.93, p < 0.001), better knowledge (B = 0.04, p = 0.038), and positive attitude towards VTE prevention (B = 1.35, p < 0.001) were all significantly and positively associated with higher practice scores in VTE prevention.
Conclusions
Our study provided a comprehensive understanding of the ophthalmic nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice in VTE prevention, as well as identified specific items in each dimension for improvement. In addition, our study showed multiple factors were associated with ophthalmic nurses’ practice in VTE prevention, including environmental factors, training and management, knowledge and attitudes toward VTE prevention. Our findings provide important implications and guidance for future intervention programs to improve the ophthalmic nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice in VTE prevention.

Mental fatigue has shown to be one of the root causes of decreased productivity and overall cognitive performance, by decreasing an individual’s ability to inhibit responses, process information and concentrate. The effects of mental fatigue have led to occupational errors and motorway accidents. Early detection of mental fatigue can prevent the escalation of symptoms that may lead to chronic fatigue syndrome and other disorders. To date, in clinical settings, the assessment of mental fatigue and stress is done through self-reported questionnaires. The validity of these questionnaires is questionable, as they are highly subjective measurement tools and are not immune to response biases. This review examines the wider presence of mental fatigue in the general population and critically compares its various detection techniques (i.e., self-reporting questionnaires, heart rate variability, salivary cortisol levels, electroencephalogram, and saccadic eye movements). The ability of these detection tools to assess inhibition responses (which are sensitive enough to be manifested in a fatigue state) is specifically evaluated for a reliable marker in identifying mentally fatigued individuals. In laboratory settings, antisaccade tasks have been long used to assess inhibitory control and this technique can potentially serve as the most promising assessment tool to objectively detect mental fatigue. However, more studies need to be conducted in the future to validate and correlate this assessment with other existing measures of mental fatigue detection. This review is intended for, but not limited to, mental health professionals, digital health scientists, vision researchers, and behavioral scientists.

This review is intended for, but not limited to, mental health professionals, digital health scientists, vision researchers, and behavioral scientists.Rewarding outcomes enhance attentional capture and delay attentional disengagementhttps://peerj.com/articles/158682023-08-182023-08-18Minmin YanZong MengNa HuAntao Chen
Attentional capture and disengagement are distinct process involved in attentional orienting. Most current studies have examined either the process of attentional capture or disengagement by manipulating stimuli associated with either positive (gains) or negative outcomes (losses). However, few studies have investigated whether attentional capture and disengagement are modulated by reward and loss outcomes. In the current study, we want to examine whether positive or negative outcomes could modulate distinguishing process of attentional capture and disengagement. Here, we manipulated different colored singleton stimuli associated with reward or loss outcomes; these stimuli were either presented at the center of screen or at the peripheral location. The participants’ task was to search the target and identify the orientation of line segment in target as quickly as possible. The results showed that people had difficulty disengaging from a central reward-distractor, in comparison to loss- and neutral-distractor when target was presented at peripheral location. Similarly, peripheral reward-distractor captured more attention than loss- and neutral-distractor when target was presented at the center of screen after central fixation disappeared. Through our discoveries, we can conclude that positive rewards can increase attentional capture and delay attentional disengagement in healthy people.
