Summary
My research focuses on the study of marine macrophytes in seagrass beds. The main objective is to contribute toward the general knowledge of the dynamics of the principal components of the seagrass communities in reef systems. The questions I deal with are mainly ecological, but I collaborate with other researchers to test hypotheses in histology, demography, population genetics, ecosystem recovery and management. Principal lines of research are: 1) To study aspects of vegetation-environment interaction (abiotic and biotic factors), 2) Vegetation-environment interaction (abiotic and biotic factors), amongst other the interaction plant-animal (from a "plant point of view"), 3) Monitoring program (production, biomass and vegetation composition) on fixed sampling sites in the Puerto Morelos reef lagoon. Selected data of this monitoring program are integrated in the international CARICOMP (Caribbean Coastal Marine Productivity) project, 4) Clonal biology and population genetics of seagrasses, 5) Reproductive ecology, phenology and development of the reproductive structures of the seagrasses, 6) The impact of massive influx of pelagic Sargassum spp. on Caribbean coastal ecosystems (since 2015)
