The Israel Vega´s laboratory is mainly interested in the biology of the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata, with emphasis in the study of an intracellular symbiont that inhabit the digestive gland, as well as some applied areas of environmental health and human diseases. This animal was introduced (ca. 1980) to several South East Asian countries for aquaculture, and has become a serious pest for rice and other crops. This species has a potential to become a model organism since it may give valuable insights to our understanding across diverse fields in integrative biology. Our interest is focused in the evaluating of different physiological hypothesis in evolutionary and toxicological scenario.
